Is is dead? Asus A7V333 gives no response :(

Injury

Lifer
I restarted my computer for the first time in about a month today, I don't recall having made any BIOS changes or anything last time I started up or even opening up my case for a while...

The computer shut down and just wouldn't restart. No CPU fans spinning, no power being delivered to other devices, no sound of my monitor firing up. NOTHING.

The board is two years old so I can't say I would be SURPRISED by it crapping out, but I really don't freaking want that to happen!!

The power indicator light on the board comes on and stays on, there is just no response from the power switch. I unplugged the ATX connector from the board and connected the green wire to a black wire, turned on the PSU and it came on... it just won't do ANYTHING when connected to the board.

There are no indications of burns, exploded resistors or capacitors, it was all running perfectly fine before I shutdown.

I've removed all my PCI cards, disconnected my drives and left just my video card plugged in and still no response.

Any help? Have work that needs to be done tonight and no way of doing it right now 🙁

Workaround: assuming your hard drive is on the regular ATA controllers and not the RAID controller, go get yourself another VIA-based motherboard while the stores are still open, and chances are good that your Windows installation will take it in stride.

If your power supply does not have an ATX12V cable and the new board has a fitting for one, then get a suitable power supply too. Make it a good reliable brand, such as Antec or Enermax.

As for the core problem here, maybe your case's power button is not actuating properly. Lessee here... A7V333 manual... ahh, same as other Asus boards, so use a piece of metal to make a brief electrical connection between these two pins. If the system starts up, then your case's power button might not be actuating the electrical switch mounted behind it, or the electrical switch itself may be faulty.

No luck with the bad power switch theory.

When I tried it, it seemed like the power light dimmed the slightest bit, but it may just have been irritated eyes hoping for some sign of life.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm going to pick up a new board and wait to open it up until I absolutely have to tonight. 🙁

Can I suggest a step you can take right now: remove the CPU from the board and try firing it up with no CPU, no video, and no RAM, no anything, just the bare board. If the PSU's fans start up with the CPU removed, then it's probably a CPU failure instead of a board failure.

While you're at the store, remember to get some thermal grease.

Same thing, no response.

Guess it is definately a board issue. 🙁

Guess I'll definately have to get a new one now.

Thanks for the help mech. 🙂
