Just curious...some say yes, some say no. The guy at the store was pretty adamant that i get one. Also, does anyone know of where i can get beds/bed frames & matresses for cheap?

thanks atot

I think it would be if the mattress was just sitting on a metal frame. Wouldn't it sink through the gaps?

Depends on your bed frame. Some require a boxspring, some don't. If your bed frame doesn't require a boxspring, then you probably won't notice the difference (other than the difference in elevation).

You can be like this guy I knew and just place the mattress directly onto the floor. No need to bother with box springs or even frames.

No need to bother with the possibility of a woman sleeping in your bed either.

Some things can go wrong when you think too far outside the boxspring.

TIps when buying a mattress. Dont expect to pay more than 50% of the advertised price. Matttress retailers ALWAYS mark up mattresses close to 500%

Haggle and you will get a $3000 set for less than $1500. They still make money.

If you have more than 1 mattress discounter in your area, for example we have Sleepys and 800 Mattress, then call one of them up get the lowest price on a set from one of them. THen call the other one and they will beat the price by 10-20%. Call back the original one, tell them #2 is beating there price, and keep doing this until one tells you they can no longer beat the price. This will be at about 20% above their cost and will get you the cheapest lowest possible price.

I do this all the time for anyone in my family that ever buys furniture. I have saved them (and myself) alot of money.

Read this.

Box Springs: I find them wholly unnecessary. Think about it: Presumably, you could put a box spring under your box spring for even more "give" and "support." Another box spring under those two. Where do you draw the line? Also, remember that box springs add significantly to your cost. One reasonable argument I heard for them is that they save wear on your mattress, but I had no way to prove or disprove this.

Many Europeans use platform beds without box springs. Do you hear them complaining? I don't use a box spring, and I don't miss it. It's a princess/pea thing. If you need 17 layers, OK. If you only need one, don't buy a box spring, unless you don't like platforms and can't think of anything better to put your mattress on. My recommendation: Put your mattress on the floor?it saves money on nightstands. Give in to gravity!

If you don't have one, your matress may curve and get lumpy. They're for support- not much else.

I've got one of those fake box springs that is just made out of plywood. It works great.

I have done this (I got a $1800, which was the sales price, set for $800), but in the case of sleepys, you need a written quote to get the extra 20%. You also need to know what the equivalent model is. If you do not know, then you run a risk of them just matching teh price and not giveing you an extra % off. Here is a list for sealy....

BTW. most retailers will not haggle.

The guy at the store is a salesman. Of course he will be adamant about selling you an unnecessary boxspring. When I was in the Navy, my bed consisted of a flimsy 2 inch mattress on a metal frame on the ship. That was the most comfortable bed I have ever known.

As a single man, there is little need to purchase furniture since a single man can be expected to eventually marry. The wife will then want to buy new furniture and the old stuff will get in the way. Plan for the future and spend less money now on unnecessary things.

The thought about bringing a woman home is a possibility. Although by the time a girl sees the bedroom, she is not in the mood to walk away because you do not have a 4 post bed. It may even give her the feeling that she can improve your life by providing home furnishings in a committed relationship.

Correction: A commited one-night relationship?!?

May as well sleep directly on the floor with the rest of the insects crawling around.

Meh, they didn't drop the price for me, though I didn't push too hard. All I tried was that I really wanted this mattress here but that I couldn't afford it. He just said you'll have to step down to this one then. It was like their second cheapest set anyway, and the other mattress retailers aren't any cheaper unless they had big sale on one.

One of the houses I had in college didn't have a boxspring. I'm not sure it made a difference or not. The new bed and spring I bought feels much better than that did, but that might just be the mattress.

I didn't buy a frame as I'd rather just put it on the floor. So I guess I probably didn't need the boxspring but it wasn't very expensive and makes it so my bedroom doesn't look like a college one with just a mattress on the floor. But now I need a damn night stand! :)

I don't know if it's the same at all stores but the place I bought my mattress at uses the same box spring for every mattress purchased there. I didn't realize this until after it was delivered - I was taking off the tags and one on the box spring said "King box spring - Sealy corner protectors" (since I bought a Sealy mattress).

They didn't try to sell me on the quality of the box spring or anything, but it still kind of surprised me.
