Is Iraq responsible for the West Nile Outbreak?

As I was reading THIS article about USA sending germs to Iraq for "medical research"......I was very surprised to read this:

"The CDC also sent samples of a strain of West Nile virus to an Iraqi microbiologist at a university in the southern city of Basra in 1985, the records show. "

This got my attention because most people over here had ever heard of it before the first outbreak in 1999.

Then I did a quick Google search and found the following articles:

http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2002/8/9/34600.shtml

http://www.csmonitor.com/2002/0918/p11s01-cojh.html

Granted, neither are teh most respectable of news organizations, but it gets you thinking

Considering that West Nile virus is pretty tame (well, compared to Ebola, smallpox, etc), i'd say that if that's the extent of the Iraqi weapons program, we're in good shape.

If they really are behind it, this act of terrorism ranks up there with that kid that bounced that airplane off the side of a building, killing himself and breaking a window

I'd say the Geriatric Defamation Leauge is behind it, since old people are the only ones that are really weak enough to fall victim to it.

Maybe Bush is behind it, and that's the only idea he has to save Social Security :D

I have to suspect that I am now Immune to West Nile Virus. I Live in SW Florida and the Mosquitoes are not bugs around here, they are airplanes. They local government even use airplanes to combat them ;)

I am always being bit, even with spray on. And from the way I understand it, one of 2 things happen when you get infected. One being you get sick and possibly die if you are old or have a weak immune system. Two being nothing happens and your body becomes immune to it from that point forward. Me being in good shape and not old, I think I am ok :)

Plus they have a warning/alert for it in my area

Here is what the local NBC affiliate has on it for my area

EDIT to fix a couple typos

Me too. That's the convenience of whacky conspiracy theories, they can be made to fit any situation.

Why would Iraq wish to kill a bunch of birds and horses? Are they going to kill all life in America the slow way?

You raise a valid point here. And we still don't know who is responsible for the Anthrax letters! Coinsidence, maybe...no one can say for sure. One of the people testing befor congress, the head of the bioolgical weapons inspectors that was in Iraq before, made the point aboutthe Anthrax letters. He said, there's no proof, but think about who has the motive, means, etc.... Iraq has the means and motive. Who else has the means and motive. But like the inspector said, there is no smoking gun.

Yes, Ifind this west nile outbreak strange. Where'd it come from? Is this a wrning from Iraq to back off?

Our government knows more than we do, and it's their job to protect us. The gov't will do what is in our best interests, so conspiracy theories are useless. Just let our gov't do theiur job and we'll be fine.

Hay, kherman, said almost exactly what I did in another thread where I was playing the part of a gullable.... a gullable...., well you provide the noun. :D

Edit: Here it is:

The United States has been very very naughty at times in its history. The people haven't the faintest idea what is going on. We have a democracy so it's kind of important to keep them in the dark least they do something against our best interest. Only our leaders are wise enough to guide us.
