Is installing ghost needed to make backups?

Not if you make bootable floppies on another machine.

Same with Acronis True Image, I think you need to install it to create its bootable CD. Once you've made the CD you can then uninstall it.

I use this program to create/restore images of my OS and Data partitions to/from DVD media. I've successfully restored my OS partition several times with this program.

For Ghost 8 or 2003 or whatever, the only file required is ghost.exe, less than 1MB, preferaby on a bootable floppy (DR-DOS from bootdisk.com is good). It is also nice to have ghostexp.exe (explorer) on the HDD for use in Windows. So if you have those files or can extract them it is not required to install all the Symantec bloat. I think Ghost 9 is a diff'rent grranimal based upon PQ DriveImage.

To do backup, you may use
1) ghost boot floppy
2) ghost boot cd
3) or whatever boot disk, and then run the ghost program that is stored in your harddisk

Symantec Ghost is yesterday's news. Get Acronis TrueImage 8 and let it create a bootable CD and you can do anything you want indpendent of the OS.
