Is importing a car from US to Canada a good idea?

I was just checking out some Blue Book prices for BMW 3-series in the USA and they seem a lot lower than those in Canada. Is it a good idea for me to go down to the States and buy my car, and then just drive it back here? I live only a few hours away from the border anyway.

there's lots more involved than that. :)

Like? I brought one from Canada to the US and it wasn't a prob at all really. Had to have a letter from the dealer saing it met US standards for emissions and safety but thats about it. I knew a car lot that used to bring from US to Canada and I know they had to install daytime running light relays but other than that..no clue.

my mom used to have a registered importer company. basically every day they did paperwork for bringing cars over from the US. basically you have to have certifications for emissions and such, then there's the whole speedometer issue because they're in different units, that has to be changed, then DRL's can be an issue. if i caught the jist of it right it was a huge pain in the ass. :) but YMMV.

You had the change speedos? I never did and it was never mentioned. I think most are in both now anyways. Just the odometers would be wrong.
