is IM'ing through VPN more secure than WIFI

I have to connect to my school's wireless network through a VPN client. When I am chatting in IM, is it reasonable to assume that the data can't be sniffed vs just an open Wifi connection?

I'm not too concerned with someone using brute force to see what I send; rather, just the casual observer who may intercept what is typed.

Any additional info is appreciated
