is idling at 50 degrees Celsius odd for a 3800 X2?

I have a 3800 X2 processor on an Asus A8V-Deluxe Mobo, and it's idling at about 50 degrees celsius...I'm not sure if this is too warm or not? I know dual cores run hotter, but I'm not sure how much hotter they're supposed to be

yeah that sounds a bit hot - my dual core opty idles at around 26 degrees celsius - wot are u using to measure the temps? wot cooling are you using? Voltages?

stock voltage, stock cooling fan, and using Asus Probe to measure temp....I'm about to start up Civ 4 and see if it runs much hotter under idle...it's running at 52 celsius with Super Pi but I suspect that Super Pi doesn't load a dual core the same way it does a single core

It really shouldnt be getting that hot even under stress - when you fixed on the stock HSF did you replace the crappy 'thermal pad' with some proper thermal paste? It might be worth buying a third party heatsink if you cant sort it out - you might damage your CPU if you're running too much hotter (eg 60 degrees) for prolonged periods - is the temp measured in the bios or do u access it through windows?

accessed through windows, via Asus Probe (it's a program that came with the A8V)...I'm using Arctic Silver 5...maybe I didn't use enough.

Oddly enough, under load it runs at 53 degrees celsius...so it only goes up 1 degree...not sure what ot make of that

Check the temps in the bios - they should be more accurate. If not, I had a similar problem with a 3500 about a year ago, but after reseating the CPU and reapplying the paste and HSF it seemd to work much better

My X-2 idles at 39C according to CoreTemp (hottest core). PC Probe reports 27C. Is this normal? Running Orthos it says 57C (hottest core). I'm using stock cooling with cool&quiet on.

same thing. I just reapplied the AS5 and it still idles at about 49-50. Now sometimes AS5 takes a while to 'settle in' but still, even then I should be getting lower temps I'd imagine. I'm using the stock heatsink/fan from my 3500+, but it's the same sink/fan they use for the 3800, so I'm not sure why that would matter. Is there any way I could maybe manually force the fan to spin faster or something?? Again when it's under load though it doesn't even really go up more than a degree or so celsius, it just starts out hotter. what gives?

The only thing I can imagine is that the HSF is just not cutting it - if the CPU is massively overheated in the first placfe, then running it under load wont make much difference to the temps - AS5 is only going to give you 2 degrees or so improvement anyway - it might be worth getting hold of a better heatsink - im using the thermalright xp90 which works wonders. A quick thought tho, maybe try reversing the air direction of the fan above the CPU - I have mine blowing down on to the CPU which also cools the surrounding parts of the motherboard

you sure your hsf is mounted properly? I had similar problems (actually worse, machine would shutdown with thermal warming) and it turns out I installed the clip upside down. Flipped it over (after cleaning and reapplying past on cpu) and voila, no more temperature problem.

well I left it running over night, maybe the AS5 had to spread out more or something, I'm idling at 40 degrees celsius now

under load now it will go up to 50, but comes back down to 40 pretty quickly after the load is off, so that's good

depends on your room temp.. 3800x2 can idle in the 50's if you're in the southern US where its really hot...

Sounds about right. I idle at 41, hits 47-51 under heavy load. With all the stuff in my case I'd say thats pretty good.

For one core being stressed, that's fine. When both of my cores run stressed they hit around 57C on stock cooling.

Really? Get XP90 get both cores at 29 degrees C max!!!! Thats 1.51V with 65% overclock - fork out the $40 extra!
