Is hell endothermic or exothermic

Yeah, this is one of those e-mails those goes around and it may be old but this is the first time I've seen this one and it's pretty funny. It does, however, bring up a point which I'll address at the end:

The following is supposedly an actual question given on a university chemistry exam. The answer by one student was so profound that the professor shared it with colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well.

Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)?

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following:

First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Most of these religions state: that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell.

Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added. This gives two possibilities:

1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose.

2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.

So which is it?

If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my Freshman year that, "it will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you", and take into account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number 2 must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over. The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore, extinct, leaving only Heaven, thereby proving the existence of a divine being which explains why, last night, Teresa kept shouting "Oh my God."

THIS STUDENT RECEIVED THE ONLY "A"!!!
The point I wanted to bring up was this statement:

"Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell."

If there is a god, is there only one true religion? What if people pick wrong? Are those that made the wrong choice all doomed to hell?

There's only one way for you to know for sure...

I guess it would depend on how the millions of new arrivals get there each day. If they open a door on thier way in, Hell is getting raped by thier heating bill. if its a sealed environment, and the new arrivals just "appear" then they are probably pretty heat efficient.

To quote South Park:

Protestant: Hey, wait a minute. I shouldn't be here, I was a totally strict and devout Protestant. I thought we went to heaven.
Hell Director: Yes, well, I'm afraid you are wrong.
Soldier: I was a practicing Jehovah's Witness.
Hell Director: Uh, you picked the wrong religion as well.
Man from Crowd: Well who was right? Who gets in to Heaven?
Hell Director: I'm afraid it was the Mormons. Yes, the Mormons were the correct answer.
The Damned: Awwww...

Well, according to Dante, the soul of the "virtuous heathen" (that is, the virtuous person that did not accept Christ before he died) resides in the first circle of Hell, Limbo. After the Apocolypse, Christ will descend into Hell once again and carry those deserving to Heaven with him, where they and all others deemed worthy will live in the glory of God for all eternity. Dante's theory is based on those of numerous religious philosophers and theologians before him, and a heavy dose of made-up nonsense. When it comes down to it, what kind of myopic, merciless God would condemn all those virtuous people (and unbaptized babies) who didn't happen to be Christians to the Inferno for all eternity? Well, the Christian God would.

I've seen that before...I doubt it is real though ;)

But to the point that was made...I don't think so. Ultimately we can't say what god thinks, or what he will do in situations like this as its extremely difficult to ascertain. While I think the SHORTEST path to God exists, there are many other ways that will also eventually get you there~ so the best thing to do is life your life virtuous and TRY to stay out of other people's beleifs unless they ask you or its a discussion of some sort ;)

Good post..

Personally like most intellegent people would think Dante is full of crap. But he did write some funny stuff. If he is correct the entire religious right is going to be in for a fun time.

EDIT:

"A sorrowful group of spirits approaches the poets. Hunched low to the ground by huge rocks slung about their shoulders, these spirits must contemplate their pride until they have served their appropriate penance. Dante berates these souls by saying, ?O Christians, arrogant, exhausted, wretched, whose intellects are sick and cannot see, who place your confidence in backward steps, do you not know that we are worms and born to form the angelic butterfly that soars, without defenses, to confront His judgment??
