hdtv blows away reg tv. that being said u can't afford it. hdtv ready can mean anything. supports only the lower res or wahtever:p save up some more.

everyone says that but i honestly cant tell the difference, my parrents have one and it looks the same to me, DVDs also look the same as they do on my 27in regular tv useing RCA connects, they have a 36 in tau running component and it looks no better to me, its just brighter

Are they using a hdtv tuner??? What is their hdtv source?? HDTV completly blows standard definition away. Sounds more like they are not watching hd and/or the tv isn't calibrated correctly.

time warner is the source, and its set up right, and we get all of like 10 HD channels and NO they dont look that different

I'd make sure that they have a hd cable tuner and not just a digital box. Also make sure the cable box is set up to output 1080i.

Also, make sure:

1. You're watching a HD program (not all are, even on "HD" channels)
2. It's connected via DVI, or if not that, then VGA, if not that, then 5-BNC, if not that, than Component (3-RCA's, YPbPr). If not those, then it's not HD

Do this:

1) PROPERLY calibrate your widescreen HDTV-ready set. (Get that thing out of torch mode, ya bunch of idiots!). Preferably 57" or greater. Calibrate with Avia, DVE, or an ISF-trained technician if you really care about what you're watching.

2) Set your HD tuner to ABC
3) Set your standard cable tuner to ABC
4) Sit and wait until the first Monday Night Football Game. Ask your SO to feed you if necessary.
5) When the game comes on, flip back and forth between the standard cable input and the HD input.

If you don't see a difference there, then may god have mercy on your soul. You probably don't have a significant other, are near death from starvation, and your vision is failing. Go toward the light.

Seriously, asking whether or not HD is worth is like asking if it's worth it to spend $75K on a car. It all depends on how much you care about it. That being said, an HD tuner from my cable company costs just $2 more a month, so if you already have an HD-ready TV, it's extremely hard to believe that it wouldn't be worth it.

its not worth it to spend 75K on a car, it doesnt do anything better then a 50K$ car does or even a 20K$ car

sh!t a car that costs 1000$ will get you from point A to B just fine

Which is absolutely true if that's all you're looking for in a car. Some of us are not....

Just as some of us are anxiously awaiting the demise of the utter crap that is 480i.
