i'm looking at buying a tv. i dont have the money for a $2000-3000 tv, my budget is closer to $500-600 max. i've been looking around, it seems i can get a 27" hd-ready monitor for around 600. but then again, i can get a 35inch non hd tv for 400.

the only tv i really watch is nfl games, and nba playoffs sometimes. i'm never watched anything on hdtv before (all my friends are poor or cheap and havent gotten it). is the hd picture really that much better? even on a smaller screen like a 27"?

I have a Mitsubishi 55in HDTV intergrated. It is really nice.

I can definately tell the difference from the HDTV monitor teevee we used to have and the difference between this one and the rest of the teevees in the house is astounding.

:)

If you have a Walmart nearby, they sell 32" Sanyo HDTV's with built-in HDTV tuners for around $750.

Don't blow $600 on a 27" HD-ready monitor when a 32" w/ built-in HD-tuner is only a little more.

if i'm getting comcast cable though, they're providing a HD receiver pretty cheap, do i really need an HD-tuner then?

you need a tuner or and intergrated.

I am not sure what the standard will be when all channels are HDTV. I had to get the receiver cause I have DirecTV and needed a place to put the access card.

If he's going to get comcast, then he doesn't need a tuner, unless he wants more local digital/HDTV channels than what comcast offers.

How much is the tuner?

I've got an HDTV without a tuner but I don't get the service...I bought the TV more for movies.

only certain HD local channels are included, and that varies market to market.

The difference on tube TV's is relatively small compared with rear projection or flat panel. Tube TV's tend to have very poor max resolutions.

First of all, what channels does your local tv provider carry in HDTV? If they have the channels you like to watch, go for it! If not, like my provider, it's not worth it.

i know that and i know people with projection TVs and people with projectors and screens and really expensive crap, IMO it doesnt look enough better to justify 100X the cost,

id rather pay for better sound quality because you can actually hear that

Before I suscribed to the extra channels thru DirecTV, I used an old pair of Rabbit ears to get the local HD channels OTA

Yep, or you can get one of the best indoor antennas available, the Zenith Silver Sensor, for about $20-25 for OTA HD reception.

The more I look at HDTV, the less impressed I am. Guess I am taking it for granted, which is good, it'll save me some money :p

The content is weak and too expensive, and the stand along equipment for OTA broadcasts is still too expensive. Not a bang-for-your-buck technology at the moment.

It's a very impressive difference at full or near full resolutions, when compared with DVD or lower quality. The problem is very few people are seeing it in even 1/4 of the available resolution.

Are they using a hdtv tuner??? What is their hdtv source?? HDTV completly blows standard definition away. Sounds more like they are not watching hd and/or the tv isn't calibrated correctly.

the same way, you might say an AF Nikkor lens blows away some generic pos, but someone else may not be able to tell the difference. I for one can definately tell HD from regular tv.
