looking to buy a cable to connect laptop to projector.

what is the usual connector on the laptop end?

true.

The thing about hdmi, is it confirms everything I've said about cables, splitters etc. Get good quality cable trust me. I've seen it to many times. So it's not just power cables it is more.

Hope that made sense if not pm. 🙂

Most default cables are male-male. It's probably by convention, just caught on and the momentum built up.

hm.. all ports on a laptop is female?
is that by some design recommendation by a computer consortium?

It's generally common sense that little things sticking out of the sides of laptops are both bad for ergonomics and also have a tendency to break off when the thing is transported. Cables on the other hand tend to be flexible so that's where they like to stick male ends. Plus it's generally cheaper to replace a cable than a motherboard so any pins that could potentially get bent or damaged go on the cable.

DVI and old parallel ports are a little different because both have the pins recessed so there's nothing sticking out but seem to still follow this... usually.
