Is Hard Drive toast?

My 40 gb Maxtor seems to have shait the bed. System will not boot to windows. CMOS does not recognize the drive but it does recognize my 2nd hard drive.

Unfortunately, I have been somewhat remiss in backing up the drive.

Any thoughts on what I should do short of returning it to Maxtor under warrantee?

like nihil said check that cable, always check the cheapest solution first
and remove any slaves to that drive for troubleshooting
