I just got a external USB HD encloser from frys. So i put my 120GB HD in there ,it worked for about a week now it wont even spin up. Do you think the motor got too much voltage from the wall wart (PS)?
When i spin it in my hand(90* back and forth) it sounds like somthing inside is whining(reee reee). Also i have tried it in a desktop and no go.

Anyone ever have any luck taking the motor, or platters out and swapping with another Drive. Any help is greatly appricated. It has about 90GB of stuff that will be missed. TY

Also other drives I know work dont spin in the USB encloser.

that sound sounds like the reading part scraping on the disks. as for swapping somehow I dont see that happening. but I guess you could try 😛

i've heard horror stories of people opening up drives and trying to work on them, mostly people trying to mod them with a clear cover or something

The only think you will get out of opening up the drive is some mirrors to hang on the wall and a magnet to put on the fridge.

Time to call ontrack and put a -$1500 entry in the checkbook

Backup Backup Backup..... I hate to be the one to say that.

What this forum needs is a sticky for backup and recovery solutions.

No offense meant--it's got to suck to be in that position. Good luck.

Target for practice. Ill add it to the pile of dead HD🙁.That was supposed to be my backup, I'm gonna get a mess of Dvd-R disc. Time to start over😉

I wouldn't try. My friend had (or has, he finished the class) a professor who worked for Western Digital and she said that the needles that spins over the drive is only 100nm above it, and that would be akin to have a 747 fly one foot off the ground...

so that isn't something i'd open and play with 😉
