Is GPS (global Positioning) a service you have to pay or subscribe for?

Somebody gave me a GPS system for my IPAQ (blue tooth). I havent installed it yet and may just sell it.

Do I have to subscribe to anything for the service to work? or is having the hardware all I need.

I cant tell from reading the box. It does not mention anything about subscription service required outside the box.

peace

yes

you must pay $29.99 a month for GPS satellite use.

Paypal me $20 and I will hook you into the system.

You need the hardware, and then some software to show your position on a map.

However, using the GPS signals is free

"you dont need to pay anything."

now this is the answer I wanted.

Seriously it sucks if there is a subscription service ($29/ month) I am not going to africa or something. At this point it just a novelty toy and will only use it
if its free.

I guessing from the innuendo's there is a way to activate it illegally.

There is no subscription service necessary, you just need a receiver.

They're feeding you a line of BS, & sadly you're buying it.

"hmm...a bluetooth GPS unit. Very cool indeed. Who makes it? "

The box has HP IPAQ all over it and its says it made for the IPAQ. I am not sure if it will work for other blue tooth enabled devices.

Nah there's no activation fee, illegal or legal =p Just turn it on and set it up and it should work.

I just bought an OEM Garmin GPS antenna, and I wrote the software I needed for its use; however, you can buy any of the cheap mapping software that can make use of any GPS device (including the OEM antenna) that supports the NMEA 0183 protocol, or in some cases Garmin's protocol.

There are no civilian GPS satellites, just to let you know. US Gov't reserves the right to block access to GPS to one day to the next. Expensive piece of equipment that doesn't work all the time for more than just that one reason.

Ill use a map.

The GPS satellites are US Military. You already pay for it.

However, their being military, you shouldn't be too horribly surprised if one day, your stuff doesn't work anymore because the terrorists were using American GPS satellites for planning or somthing.

But no, there is no subscription fee. Plug it in, turn it on, install the software, get a signal from 2+ satellites.

As for the innuendo, it's just ATOT being retarded

they wont ever stop the signal to civilians.
but they can degrade the accuracy signal to civilians.
so youre 5 meters off or so.
no biggie, just differentially correct it from a known basestation.
all GPS was this way prior to 1999 or 2000 whenever the military finally turned the signal degradation off.
