I never had facebook and I'm tempted to get a social networking site because it seems like everyone has one. Is Google+ worth bothering with or is it just going to die?

What's the risk? Get one. Try it out. If you don't like it, sue Google.

I have one. Google really did some nice work with the UX and I like it a lot. I'm sticking with Facebook for the meantime while most of my friends are slowly migrating to Google+.

The one element that does bother me is the "+1" thing. It's the same thing as Facebook's "Like", and it's equally as stupid. Its only redeeming feature is that I can use it to easily share interesting/useful links with people in my circles.

I like Google+ better for how it functions but right now my friends don't use it as heavily as facebook.

after i saw it I said to myself... man not another one. I was on friendster then someone invited me to fb. I was like... another fail on its way, who's going to switch to yet another??? Then everyone got on that - well now that I'm only on FB, and see Google+, I guess I'm just waiting till everyone is exclusively on the latter if that ever happens. Using both will be such a PITA.

I've used myspace, facebook, and now google+ but I never spend much time on them because the interfaces, all of them, are so unintuitive.

Nope. I got it then added a few people and then a few added me... and then I never really looked at it again. All the shit I want is on Facebook because A) All the people are there, and B) It has events, and C) It has groups.

G+ has none of that.

Seems to have fizzled out after the initial early adopter rush. Nobody needs another Facebook I guess.

No social network is 'worth' anything, especially if you want to get it just because 'everybody else has one'. You will just create an account, try it out for a few hours, and then abandon it. Keeping up with old friends, wanting to share (something) with a group of people, now these are at least some reasons to try it.

I don't think any of the social networks are going to 'die' (Myspace, and even Friendster is still around). Nothing is really 'better' than the others as everyone will have their own reasons to like/dislike them.

Having said that, I like Google+ at least 10 times better than Facebook. I actually post things on G+. Never on public and always directed to one or more circles. On Facebook I ended up just collecting old friends and checking maybe once a week for like two minutes (or the random times when I had to reply to a message). Facebook is cluttered, inefficient, and full of spams and games I don't care about.

Meh, it's not bad, and certainly worth getting considering it's free. But if you don't use Facebook I'm not sure what would make you use Google+. I guess it's better to use but it seems to me that people who rarely use Facebook are going to end up rarely using Google+ as well.

And of course there's the "nobody uses it except nerds" problem. Good luck getting ANY of your non-nerd or non-social networking obsessed friends to join. Nothing against nerds, I'm one too, but I prefer being able to share stuff with all of my friends instead of just some of them.

Isn't that the whole point? I don't know why you'd be against the idea of "Like" or "+1."

Anyone who makes fun of people who use Facebook and posts here in OT regularly is about as big a hypocrite as you can be. I don't use it though, no interest.

I use it and like it. I only have a small number of friends on Facebook, but some of them are so enmeshed, I doubt they'll ever leave.

Oddly enough, there's more activity on my Diaspora page than there is on Google+.

Most people are on Facebook, I'd say just get a Facebook account. I'm not really big on social networking but I do have a Facebook that I go on every now and then. Only "geeky" type people like us know about google+ now as it's not really "out there" so if your plans are to social network with family and such, Facebook is better.

My prediction is that Google will end up buying Facebook at some point. Something just tells me that.

Um..CIRCLES?

A G+ circle != Facebook Group

A Facebook group is like a Sports league you form and want to broadcast events, pictures, etc... that people can sign up for, you can keep separate from your personal account and several people can administrate.

G+ you have to add all the admins to your circles and if the admin changes everyone has to go add that new person to a circle unless you create a fake G+ account that multiple people have passwords to.

Why are you treating this like it's some large ticket item purchase? It's not like you are trying to decide if you should spend $2,000 on a new LED TV or something.

It's free. Try it out. If you don't like it, you can just stop.

I like Google+. It seems limited though. How do you create public groups? Like photography or Music?

The one thing I really like about it is the Hang Out feature. Multiple video chat, since skype requires you to pay for it.

Google hasn't given me any other reason to use it. Well, except for that it pulls images from Picasa.
