Is good luggage worth the high price?

Debating whether or not to replace my crappy walmart luggage with some decent Atlantic/Travelpro/Ricardo pieces for my upcoming trip....

Worth it?

I paid for some Samsonite Luggage. Anything you buy is going to get beat up if you fly. It's going to be thrown on conveyer belts and trucks, etc. I would just make sure you get something that's heavy enough guage and that's easy to roll or carry through an airport terminal. Luggage tends to get heavy when you fill it up with clothes and such... Just make sure you get a quality piece of luggage that rolls easily(with quality wheels) and isn't paper-thin.

If you travel frequently (4+ times a year) you will find it nice to have well designed and built luggage.

If you dont travel so much, its kind of a wasted investment.

My wife has all nice matcing Atlantic stuff, and she thinks it is invaluable. She has 2-3 rolling pieces, 2 carry-ons of different sizes, and 2 different make-up cases that all fold out and hang up on the bathroom door.

I still use my freebie stuff from Staples.

EDIT

Since I have crappy luggage, I have no qualms about putting red duct tape (or something) all over it to make it easily indentifiable on the luggage carousel. My wife has to find a nice big red ribbon or something to put on the handle of hers, that invaribly comes off and her luggage looks just like everyone elses.

suppose it depends how much traveling you do I normally go on 2 vacations a year and am just fine with some cheap stuff. mind you its not POS stuff, but gets the job done and takes a decent beating, I noramlly try and cram everything into carryon anyway. when I go on vacation. normally wear swimshorts all day, and bring 2 nice outfits to go out to eat in.

It depends on how much you will use it. If you don't travel that much, you can go cheaper. If you expect to travel a lot, the better quality stuff is a better buy.
I smash bags for a living, so I should know.

Don't you worry that some of that ebay stuff is mislabeled and knockoff stuff from Bangladesh?

Sometimes at Costco or Sam's Club they have a special on a set. They also often sell single pieces or a small set of two.
If protecting contents is very important, get hard-sided luggage. In any case, do not overpack (overfill), as your bag can pop open during loading and the contents go everywhere. It will not get re-loaded they way you loaded it, and things will get lost, dirty, or distroyed.

i've said it before and i'll say it again: no matter how much you pay for luggage the airline will still find a way to break it

I use a $35 set from Office Depot, it seems to work pretty well..and it hasnt exactly been treated great..check back in 3 or 4 years, hehe.

Go to Ross or Tjmax, my friend bought a Kenneth Cole trolly suitcase and other luggage there that seems to work fine.

Edit: I have used the Kenneth cole trolly suitcase several times (because of storage size) but I just use it to put clothes not much else.

Samsonite is really kickass. They have a lifetime warranty, so if some moron destroys your zipper or wheel or something you just bring it to a local repair shop and get it fixed for free. I've used it a couple times, well worth it to me.
