Is glazing a bagel and calling it a donut some new fad?

First the cafeteria in my dorm started mixing these abominations in with the regular donuts, and now half the pastries in the box of donuts I got from Hy-Vee are that way. What gives? :(

I just thought of this MP3 I have of a radio show doing a segment called "Things Yoda Would Say In Bed". Much funnier than finding glazed bagels in your donut box.

No, they haven't been split. But the dough is exactly the same as what Hy-Vee uses in their bagels. I mean, they make a very soft, breadlike bagel, so it's not like I'm getting some hard-shelled thing, but still, it's a big difference.
