is it? 😕

i decided to get a few friends a domain name each, and some small hosting package...I'm going to set up something like a blog or a picture gallery on it, or whatever they want. Is that a geeky gift? 😛

geeky, yeah, but pretty cool. especially for non-technical people...they'll be like "holy cow, I have my own website!??" 🙂

Geeky? Absolutely.

But it's still a great cheap gift, you can register a domain and get web hosting for under $30/yr.

Last night I helped an AT'er get a domain/hosting as a gift for his fathers business.

1 hour later the domain propagated and it was ONLINE!

So the OP would really be giving his friends 8 cents each for that one day, hey at least hes doing it for the whole year😛.

I think this is a nice idea. Just be prepared to deal with hours of tech support when they can't check their email, get a virus, or etc.

meh, that's fine, i do that anyways...i bought domains for 2 people as of now...2 more thinking about what domain name they would like. 🙂

the two that got their domains already were EXTREMELY happy about it, and couldn't believe they could get their personal email, not something common like yahoo or msn...also they loved the idea of no more www.mypersonalpageco.com/blah/user/username/pageid="1"id?=blahblah

well, you get the idea...now it's a nice simple .com address 🙂

All I can say is I'm glad they liked it 🙂

it's geeky, but very cool, especially if you can get a blog running and are willing to set it up.

you can do stuff like install gallery or movabletype on it. those are two of my personal favorite programs.
