Is Geforce 680 2GB for $100 CAD a good deal?

Someone local is selling the following two cards together for $200 CAD.

Gigabyte geforce 680 Reference design
MSI Geforce 680 Reference design

Is this better than Skylake onboard video for gaming? (Intel HD Graphics 520)
I can't find any info on this card. I only see GTX 680's and I assume it is better than onboard graphics.

I am looking for something inexpensive to play games on until the RX480 are in stock, one for myself and the other for my boyfriend (they will not be used in SLI).

iirc 680 is about 5% faster than a 960. I sold mine for USD$80 couple months ago, which I guess is about CAD$100. Remember the card only has 2GB probably. It should be vastly superior to typical on-chip gpu.

I assume the person writing the ad just didn't include the GTX part. It will be much better than onboard graphics. It's not a bad deal for $100, especially if you can sell them for almost that much once you get your 480.

It's not a horrible price, but I'm leery of any secondhand card.

That said, it's on the DX12 support list but that 2GB is really not going to be acceptable too much longer. It uses 2x6 pin, so I guess that's nice if you don't have a 6+2 for whatever reason.

Edit - if you're going to the 480 anyway, I wouldn't drop the money on the 680s.

Pretty much dead on - $104 at the moment.

I've seen plenty of 970's going for $20-$30 more than that. I'd pay the extra money and just get something with 480 performance.

Thanks for the replies. The seller has it pending for someone on kijiji ... so I guess I'll look for something else. Maybe a GTX 970/980 or something while I wait for the next new GPU.

I found a Gigabyte GTX 970 for $200 CAD (about $153 USD). Is this a good deal?

GV-N970IXOC-4GD
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5252#ov

It's a mini version. Does it perform the same as full size or I guess it just usually doesn't clock as high?

That's a great price for a much better card than the 680. I would definitely recommend the GTX 970 for $200 CAD!!

Especially because the 1060 is like $400 here!!

Thanks for the reply. I picked up that GTX 970 today and it works great! Only thing is, if I set the refresh rate at 144hz in Windows some games crash (I have an Asus MG248Q which does 144hz, freesync, 1920x1080 resolution).

The games that crash are Dying Light and MechWarrior Online, I have not tested others yet and I'm sort of afraid to in case it damages video card/monitor like it did last time with the Zotac mini PC (which ended up in having to RMA the MG248Q monitor after DisplayPort blew out). It works great with Diablo 3 at 144hz.

Does this mean I need a more powerful video card? I wonder if the RX480/490 would be able to run these games if I set Windows to 144hz. Those games would crash before even reaching the video settings (if they have in game options for 144hz).

Or could it be some other issue? I have installed the latest Nvidia drivers for GTX 970, running Windows 10 on i5-6600k @ 4.4Ghz, 16GB DDR4 2400, EVGA G2 750W PSU, etc.

Edit: I just remembered .... I wasn't sure which DisplayPort port to plug into as there are 3 of them on this video card. Which one should I use? The DisplayPort cable is VESA compliant which I bought separately as I read others had problems with the cable that came with their Asus monitor.

I'd probably wait for a 460 imo.

460 is more of a match for a 660, not a 680.

It shouldn't matter which DP port you use.

Maybe someone with 144 Hz experience can chime in - I'm not sure as I have a 60 Hz monitor.
To my knowledge, Free sync is an AMD technology and G-sync is Nvidia's alternative. I don't know if it fully supports 144 Hz.

Have you tried 72 Hz?

I figured it out. It was the Comodo internet security software, I had to set it to game mode. Now games work great including Dying Light and ARK! Looks great! Now waiting for another card for the other computer so my boyfriend and I could play together, preferably a used GTX 980.

I'd avoid buying last gen at all... How much is the RX 480 8GB in your area?
