Is G-mail and all those other ones with massive storage really just a huge advertising database?

I was thinking about that the other day, what is there to gain for google, yahoo or anyone else to offer 2.5 gigs of free storage to each person who uses it? They do read your email if I'm correct...could they just be studying customer's habits and selling the results to interested advertisers? just a thought

lol good one!

If it is it probably isn't serving its purpose to the fullest. I can't think of one ad I've clicked on using gmail.

haha. well they offer the storage so that you'll use their service over others (knowing most people will never even use that space), and they want you to use their service so they can show ads to you.
