is flossing necessary?

I never used to floss, but after I got my braces off I decided to give it a try. The amount of stuff that comes out of the spacs between my teeth never ceases to amaze me. So now I floss every day.

I don't floss, and whenever I go to the dentist, he says "wow, you're doing a great job flossing!"

Exactly what I get.

The amount of crap I remove from my teeth when flossing daily is equal to the amount of crap I move from my teeth when flossing every 6 months. Seems pretty useless.

Perhaps your sarcasm meter is broken.

Anyway, yes I would say it's necessary for most people if they want to prevent cavities and gingivitis (sp?) and such. Food that gets stuck between your teeth and then sits there for a week rotting until it's broken down by bacteria and saliva -> bad.

People need to floss. I have to get some gum operation done in the next three years. They cut the gums and pull it up to the teeth. It then fills out over time as it heals. Gum disease gave me receding gum line in the front. I can breath with my teeth closed because the holes are so big :/

It doesn't matter that my teeth are white and straight with thousands of dollars of correctional work done--the gums look like sh!t. So floss 😛

Of course it's necessary. What are you, 13?

Here's a hint. Flossing has a little more to do with hygeine than tooth decay, although that's certainly a concern.

I dare you to go grab some floss and hit a few of your back teeth. Remove the floss from between your teeth carefully, and smell anything that you come up with.

Do it. I guarentee you will floss everyday after you do.

All you "no floss" people... DO IT.

Especially if you eat stringy meats like chicken and pork.

Once you smell the smell of rotting meat/food, you will also be able to taste the smell in your mouth. Unless you're a filthy pig, you will do everything you can to keep your mouth clean at that point.

It's seriously disgusting, and it only takes 3-4 days without flossing for the meat or other foods to start rotting, regardless of brushing and rinsing.

Xylitol gum + never brushing + never flossing + never seeing a dentist still == 0 cavities

Behold the power of five-carbon sugar alcohols upon Streptococcus mutans! Though I still wouldn't reccomend #2. No cavities + yellow teeth still == gross.

Xylitol gum
Is that kinda like Juicy fruit?

Xylitol is a five carbon monosaccharide. I use it to replace most of sugar use except for carmelizing and feeding yeasts for bread (cause it can't do either)

For flossing, get one of these, a Power Floss made by Reach (<$7).

Cleans out between your teeth like nothing else. Flossing sux and I'd rarely do it, but with these it makes it unbelievably easy and effective, and I've used it everyday since...and no bleeding/sore spots anymore either.
