Is flash media appropriate for long-term backups?

As flash media (compactflash, smartmedia, etc.) continues to drop
in price and increase in capacity, it starts to look tempting
as a long-term storage medium. In particular, smartmedia, which
has no controller, and is hence simpler than compactflas looks interesting.

But is it? Does anyone know what the longterm stability of these
cards is? Is it better than tape (e.g. DLT)? Better than a hard
drive? Better than a CDR?
