Is Firewire 1394 card compatible with 1394a enclosure??

A tale of 2 hot deals: I got a Actiontec 1394 Firewire card for free after rebate last summer from Circuit City, and a recent 1394a Mass Storage FW HD enclosure from Compgeeks recently for cheap. The enclosure works on USB and the Firewire card installed fine, but the two together don't seem to work at all. I put the card on a different PCI slot, different IRQ, downloaded new drivers, still no FW.
Any ideas? Or know of a cheap FW card that will work? Are these standards incompatible?

1394a controllers should be backward compatible with 1394 devices (and vice versa). Do you happen to have access to any other firewire devices that you can try on the card? The enclosure doesn't require you to do anything like flipping a dip switch to set it to firewire or anything does it?

Good ideas, but I only have the FW enclosure and no other FW devices. The instructions on the enclosure didn't mention any switches. "Automatic configuration without ID selection or terminator." Three IEEE1394 ports and one USB port. USB1.1 and IEEE 1394a standard. Actiontec card has a Lucent chipset, IEEE 1394 Hih Performance Serial Bus/I.Link.
