Hello everybody,

My friend recently told me that I should get Firefox and just stop using IE. What are the differences and advantanges/disadavantages? He mentioned that Firefox has better spyware protection? But doesn't SP2 fix a whole bunch of things with IE or am I completely nuts?

Thanks.

In my opinion, firefox is infinitely superior to IE. It supports tabbed browsing, an excellent popup blocker, a very intuitive download manager and the convenient google toolbar. Furthermore, the interface is extremely clean and utilitarian- aspects which I look for in all my software. Also, firefox just FEELS quicker and more responsive to me. Try it, you def. won't be disappointed.

Firefox is WAY better then IE. It is faster and much safer. ALso it has way more feutures. You may also want to consider Opera. I prefer Opera over Firefox

IE < FIREFOX < MOZILLA

Mozilla is basically a FF with a lot more preferences to play around with ;)

The zillions of extensions you can get that do so many things!!

Also, my favourite part is that it is geared towards letting you control the pages you see, instead of letting them control you. IE is like "You will view the page exactly as the web designer intended and you will like it." Firefox is like "Ok, I got this webpage. How would you like me to display it for you? Don't want those images? Removed. Want to change that style? Done. Don't want a page to execute certain javascript operations? Blocked." It allows you to see so much more information like the http headers, outlines of how it displays certain html elements and a tonne more. Although that most requires specific extensions to be installed.

I guess what I'm really saying is that it's infinitely more customizable than IE (at least to the end user, I know there are ways to customize IE). And it does it pretty well too.

Oh, and one last note. This subject comes up alot. If you want more content do a search on this forum and you'll come up with many more answers to your questions.

thanks guys.

so you guys prefer, in order of preference; 1. mozilla or opera 2. firefox , then 3. IE??

So once I get firefox or any of these other browsers, can i uninstall IE or do i have to keep it?

You'll want to keep IE. You'll still need it for Windows Update, plus it has a number of tie-ins with Windows Explorer and the help system.

However, you can set Firefox or Mozilla or whatever browser you choose to be the default browser.

Some of us prefer firefox to mozilla. I don't personally want all the extra things that come with the Mozilla suite. Firefox has the advantage of being "leaner and meaner" than either Mozilla or IE.

No, you can't uninstall IE, not without breaking parts of the operating system as a whole. Just don't use it as your primary browser.

I'm not a big fan of Opera. For one thing, it's the only one of the bunch that you have to pay for, unless you're happy with a substantial part of your screen being taken up by advertisements. I've had more problems with pages being incompatible with Opera than with any of these other browsers.

They're all varying levels of free. No reason not to try them all. Do a search though, ff gets mentioned constantly somewhere.

good choice. Both Opera and Firefox are great browsers. What you choose in the end is more based on personal preference. I do not like Mozilla either as I do not use any othe the extra stuff and Firefox is basically Moxilla just with not all the extra stuff

some people might argue that firefox doesn't have so many people looking for exploits as ie does

Here's my order listing...

Firefox > Mozilla > Opera > Avant Browser > Crazy Browser > Maxthon > all the ones i've missed > IE.

Notice how it's at the very bottom :D

Firefox is vastly superior in every regard aside from stability (at least in my case). I get random crashes.

Got any talkback IDs? If you do, pm me. If you don't, start sending reports when it crashes.

bleh firefox is ok. its definantly a replacement for ie. but maxthon pwns all. firefox is just a hassle. you have to tweak it in order to have decent loading webpages cause its so slow otherwise. and i still don't know how to disable loading more than one window and just using tabs. as well as setting the keyboard shortcuts to be different (i'd rather replace ctrl+t with ctrl+n). i'm sure there's some command you put in a file or a way to change it, but damn it should be easier.. does activex work yet?

i'd rather stick with maxthon for now.

edit: plus maxthon's adhunter 10 times better than firefox's.
