Is Fallout 3 still using the engine from Oblivion?

It uses the same engine, but I imagine there have been a significant amount of tweaks / enhancements / additions since Oblivion came out.

Which means performance will be lower than the Oblivion engine was. I think an 8800GTX will still be powerful enough to run the game with more than adequate details though.

I'm sure I read other references to the engine changes, but the only mention I find on hand atm is from a Game Informer interview of last year where they only said "This is an evolved version of the engine that ran the graphics of Oblivion, but everything from the animation of monsters to the dramatic lighting of different environments hsa been designed from the ground up for the ruined landscapes of the Fallout universe."

I'm pretty sure I also heard them refer to it as "heavily modified" or something to that effect. Anyway, it's too bad they still haven't posted specs, but the Bethesda forums for Fallout is supposedly going to post them immediately upon the announcement, as I believe it mentions in this "official" thread. http://www.bethsoft.com/bgsfor...x.php?showtopic=882436

Ugh, I hate Oblivion's engine. It looks decent, but it still doesn't run completely smoothly on my 8800GT 2 1/2 years after the game came out.

I hope that they got rid of or at least greatly enhanced the very limited capabilities of the GameBryo's current status in Oblivion to render large areas with its very annoyingly small cells system. If the loading of data as the player moves can be as smoothly and efficiently done than in Crysis or FarCry 2 (or similar to/comparable to) then I'll certainly be happy, otherwise I think I'll just pass on that one.

Yep, the cell system is easily the most obnoxious part of the engine. A nice 5 seconds of horrible stuttering every 30 seconds as I run across the countryside really smooths out the experience. I mean, Crysis may eat your machine and spit it out in a crumpled heap, but it doesn't stutter on loading - it just runs slow.

Bethesda has never been the best at optimization. Morrowind still takes way more resources than it should.

Whoa, somethings wrong then. I ran Oblivion w/ Qarl's TP3 and various other graphical upgrades and 16xQ AA just fine on my 8800GT.

He didn't say run it, he said completely smooth, as in flawless, absolutely 0 hitching. Some people are picky like that and some can overlook hitching. Not that it's a bad thing, it's just it doesn't affect others for whatever reason.

I didn't overlook hitching. It hitched every once in a while when it needed to load (every 5 mins or so while walking outside). Not bad, IMO, with only 2GB of RAM.

9600GT SLI?

I could run Oblivion pretty well with the texture pack . . . hopefully it will be good enough for FO3.

I'm guessing my AGP 7600gt with 2.4ghz quad will not be enough to run this game at high res.

I mean it tends to dip into the 20's at times. I have a fair number of mods installed and OB is very CPU demanding. My 3700+ might be holding me back. Although I do remember it running smoother with no mods. And my computer is also horribly bogged down with crap - I need to do a reformat and reinstall of XP at some point. I ran defrag and it couldn't defrag a ridiculous number of files.

Granted, it is a lot harder to mod your xbox to play pirated games than it is to download them to your computer. But I bet a lot more people do it than the devs suspect.

I was actually able to run Oblivion at medium and 1680x1050 on my A64 3200+ and 7600gt. Hope I can run at least low-med for Fallout. Regardless, view distance and grass will be the first thing I kill.

Me too. It might show that the PC (which still has more sales than consoles individually) is just the scapegoat.

Gamebryo (at least the version in Oblivion) is based on a very crappy cell system. The outdoors was divided into little cells that were IIRC a few hundred feet on each side. This made it so that as you're running through the woods, every 30 seconds or so you get a big nasty stutter due to the machine loading a new cell. The game didn't run terribly well considering it was only supposed to be loading the info for that cell too. Also, the cell system created a lot of bugs and modder headaches.

Crysis, for comparison, just has everything in 1 area and it loads things as they get closer.
