Gawd, I certainly hope so.

I've always considered the whole "social networking" thing to be completely retarded. People post stuff on there that they wouldn't normally want anyone to know about themselves. Employers use that information to either screen potential hires, or to get rid of people who say stupid things about their employers, bosses, co-workers, or stupid people who post pics of themselves doing illegal/unethical things...the kinds of things that employers don't want to have their names associated with.

Shut the doors. It's outlived its newness and should be buried.

So don't make your profile public?

Facebook is useful for keeping in touch with your friends and family, sharing photos, and coordinating events. If you leave your profile hanging wide open, and post yourself doing stupid/illegal things then I guess your just an idiot. In that case, yeah better steer clear...

Pro Tip: If you like a store, subscribe to their fan page. Most of them post crazy deals and inside info on hot products that's not available anywhere else. I think I ate free at Arby's for two weeks because of a free Market Fresh Sandwich FB coupon :)

If there is a way to join FB and subscribe to company fan pages without having anyone else see that I have an account, I will be all over that just for the deals.

I do not want to get friend requests from people I don't already see or talk to. I get enough unsolicited contacts as it is from people who passed along my email address to other people. At least they don't call me. Although I guess I could just ignore the friend requests like I ignore the emails.

Facebook looks like and behaves like it was written by amateurs.

From a general usage standpoint, it's not critical to my life or the lives of my friends. It barely supplants a mass email message or text message. If it was turned off tomorrow, nothing would change for me.

Facebook isn't going anywhere. It's the summer and school's out. Wait until September and I guarantee traffic will be right back up.

Kind of one sided reporting:

Facebook lost 6 million US users last month, but GAINED 11.8 MILLION WORLD WIDE:

http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9217581/Facebook_loses_6M_U.S._users_in_May

Part of my job it predicting trends for the next few years, and seriously, I see Facebook as becoming the new web, with websites beings a sort of "brochure add-on" for companies.

I have to agree with this.. with companies now advertising their facebook sites rather than web sites on TV, it's hard to see it going anywhere.

You have to realize that AnandTech is filled with super elite hipsters who like to shun every socially popular idea b/c they are too cool for school. Things like FaceBook are not going away. The general population loves it.

And ya, I said "too cool for school"....big whoop , wanna fight about it?

Lol. A website with over 600 million users worldwide that never, ever ever crashes is written by 'amateurs'.

You bring the lulz my friends. Got any other insane comments?

I log onto Facebook twice a day - once in the morning and once in the afternoon. I love it. Many of my closest friends do not necessarily live nearby, so it lets me stay in contact much more easily. It hasn't supplanted emails, phone calls, and letters (yes, I still write letters by hand and snail mail them) - it's augmented them.

still use it daily

great way to quickly find out what's going on with other people's lives, share pictures, and set up events.

I mentioned the background check thing to students earlier today. 3 of my students told me that they had deleted their facebook accounts recently. Maybe it WILL go the way of myspace.

Most users of Facebook are too stupid to know what that is all about. They'll be like, "Privacy settings? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? HERPADERP, I'M GONNA PLAY ANGRY BIRDS NOW, KTHXBAI."

Potential employees and students could be checked for their comments/activities in their FB pages. "Anything negative, you're not good for us". Just use the privacy settings so only your friends can see your messages. I rarely go to my FB.

I don't think it's on the decline, but once you have a huge chunk of the human population with Internet access onboard, there's not really much room to grow. They need to suck people into their ecosystem like Apple does - get them buying stuff that only works within Facebook so you feel invested (re: Farmville, etc.).

I'm not a huge fan of Facebook simply because I use other methods of contact for people (RL, AIM, etc.). I do find it very useful for having a single place to check in for social contact, however. Especially for family & friends I don't see too often - kind of like the cafeteria back in high school, you can hang out with people for a brief period of time, but not have to hang out with them ALL the time, you know?

but most facebook users (the kiddies) don't give a flip about privacy. they think everyone should know everything possible about them, and of course, they should think that it is all so very important.

Yes, and then they can learn the lesson the hard way.

Ironically, I should have my profile open because a lot of people friend me just to get access to my photos. (WhatcanIsay?I'mhot)

Mark Zuckerberg is a highly intelligent guy who made a killing exploiting the narcissism of the average person,I don`t think Facebook will go away anytime soon.

oh, I still lay 90% of the blame of privacy violations on the users. certainly.

BUT, you have to realize that Facebook is only a billion dollar company IF it's users, for the majority, put no value on privacy. Zuckerberg has made no mystery and left no speculation towards his personal opinions regarding the concept of privacy--he has flat out stated that it is a worthless concept. He truly believes that people don't won't privacy.

Point is--Don't be surprised when your lip-service privacy settings disappear.

"Worldwide, user numbers are nearing 700 million, according to Inside Facebook, which tracks its popularity - but it also says Brits and North Americans are turning off in droves.

Facebook aims to attract one billion users - it currently has around 687 million - but has reportedly lost 100,000 British users overall in May.

Commentators think this is because Britons - and six million in America, who also closed their accounts last month - are suffering from 'Facebook fatigue'.

US user numbers slumped to 149.4 million in May, down from 155.2 million.

In Canada there was a drop of about 1.5 million, and numbers also decreased in Russia and Norway."

Yes, FB is in decline but I wouldn't count it out just yet ...
