I thought there was some congressional vote in the early days and german almost won, but english won by a couple of votes. This is from my hazy memory of a really bad jr. high history teacher, so maybe it's completely made up.

Since English is the language that the Gov't of the USA uses for all purposes, does that not make it our "national language," even if it's unofficial?
If it's unofficial, then who cares?

Does that make sense to you?

Considering it's a question about language, one would think you could've phrased this better...

My answer is the same either way... it is not. People can speak Spanish or Greek or whatever they want for all I care, it doesn't hurt me one bit.

I disagree. The gov't does not use it for all purposes, mainly because the Constitution says it has to be flexible. Many gov't functions are done in multiple languages.

On the other hand, I think that English should be made our National language so the gov't will function all in English. I think this would greatly streamline the gov't.
