Is encrypting your phone then doing a factory reset ensures data is unrecoverable?

Hi guys! I just want to know your opinion, I just sold my Android phone and before selling it I first erased the data on the phone. I did some research on how to securely erase personal data on an Android phone and most of the articles I've read suggested to encrypt the phone then do a factory reset to ensure personal data cannot be recovered. Is this true? and how secure is this method compared to overwriting data several times on the data storage? Can this also be applied to hard drives?

Thank you in advance for any replies! :)

That works, and it should be good for storage drives of all kinds.
