Is ebay THAT bad when it comes to fraud, trolls, etc?

Ever since they've implemented the credit card, or valid email address system, has it approved? Should i still be as weary about new sellers compared to a few years back?

You should always be wary.

That being said, the general level of safety/security has been increased over the years and there are more ways to protect yourself.

Sellers that have been around for a while are usually dependable, it's simple logic :) (still check the feedback though). And I would be wary about new sellers, avoid them if you can. I've only had one instance where I was scammed on ebay and that was a few years back, so I still like ebay. But still be very careful on ebay and who you deal with.

ebay is everything that you have heard, and more, I would not touch that pit of vipers with a 10 foot pole.

Hmm, crap... Don't you just hate it when you see something appear on ebay, that normally isn't sold? Unfortunately it just HAD to be this guy with 0 feedback ratings. But the item should cost less than 70, would that play a role in anything? I figure that trolls wouldn't deal with pocket change (by pocket change i mean that it is not as expensive as something else they could have possibly sold).

When it comes to trolls, never assume anything.

I've bought from sellers with 0 feedback before and I've yet to be burned. Selling to (0) feedback bidders, on the other hand, I've dealt with a handful that conveniently "back out" and leave me with the damn $20-50 of listing/closing/etc fees.

Mind your p's and q's, make sure you have all the details before you bid. Let nothing surprise you. Pays to put a little more effort into the buying/selling experience.

Oh c'mon- eBay is great! Just don't go blindly bidding on stuff. Check the feedback, make sure it's a good legit product. Read the seller's fine print in the auction, etc. I have done 150+ transactions on eBay (feedback rating of 111 and climbing quickly) and have really only got burned on one a couple years ago. I love eBay and it's a great way to get rid of ANYthing! I just sold an old 1:18 scale Lexus LS400 model I bought back in 1995 for $31 today... funny, didn't think it was worth more than 15 bucks.

Be a smart buyer and an informative seller and eBay will be an amazing asset.

Ebay is a great place to get rid of your junk (gold to others). Just make sure if you sell to someone and they pay via paypal look at how long they have been registered as well as their feedback. Some of these trolls like to make a new ebay account and pay using paypal, then once they receive the item they take back their money through paypal. So you lose the money as well as the item. And its so much hassle/work trying to get your money back from Ebay and paypal. So just be cautious selling or buying from individuals with no feedback or has newly registered. Just some things i learned after being burned for $60.

If I was to buy from a new seller, I would inquire into COD. IF their legit, they shouldnt have a problem doing COD

I have been on ebay since dang near the start of it years ago, and never ever had a problem buying from sellers with 0 feedback. Like everyone else is saying, be wary but do not be afraid. I even ask for phone numbers if I am even the slightest worried about getting trolled.....

Trolls will do whatever they can to rip people off. I have my own business that accepts CC's and one day I had someone order something from my website I had then. Well the CC was for someone in Nebraska or somewhere, but the address they put for shipping was in Pakistan (Yup Pakistan). I decided to email the person who placed the order and ask them to call me to verify their order. Guess what, I had a middle-eastern sounding person call me (I am guessing from Pakistan), trying to make me think he was the person that was named on the card. The problem was, the person on the card was a female and definitely not a middle-eastern name decent. I told the person to say again what their name was, then they mumbled for a minute, I could hear papers rustling in the background, then the person hung up never to call again. I then found the correct phone number to go along with that name/cc address and called t hem. They didn't place no order with me, nor do they know who that guy was or how he came about getting their CC# and all the info. It was reported to the fbi (Not sure what has happened since then)

Basically the moral of that story is to be careful no matter what or where you buy things and use credit cards.

I used Ebay four times and got burned once for $140. :|

But I haven't used it for over a year now. Might have gotten better since.

I might try it again in a year or so.

I've had one buyer not come through (got them kicked out via SafeHarbor) and just had a seller take a week to get back to me (but worked out fine). Overall I'm satisfied, but like people say, buy carefully and be very wary of 0-feedback sellers, sell carefully and watch for 0-feedback buyers using unverified PayPal or a CC.

ebay is far worse for sellers than for buyers.

The majority of sellers with more than 2-3 feedbacks are honest. They may make a mistake once in a while, but theyre not out to get your money.

Buyers, on the other hand, seem to think that bidding on things and not paying for them is completely OK. Since it isnt "simple" fraud (they dont walk away with anything unpaid for), they dont give it a second thought. This forces sellers to make items sit for weeks while they are re-auctioned and pay fees to sell stuff 2 or 3 times.

In addition, buyers have the power to choose who to you from but sellers dont have the power to choose who to sell to. Buyers can simply decide not to buy from people with 0 feedback, but sellers have no way of blocking 0 and negative feedback buyers from their auctions.

I have had problems w/deadbeat high bidders. Currently there are 2 of them telling me that the check is in the mail. They aren't big ticket items though.

As a buyer I haven't gotten beat yet.

I usually buy on eBay rather than sell. Most of my transactions are good, I've had two deadbeats. The outcome ended up okay, but yeah. The first guy had like 30 negative feedbacks but like 500 positive. So I take a chance (seeing as he is only a 3 hour drive away if he is a deadbeat), well, I pay him a day after the auction. 1 month passes, no card, no communication. I email him and start the complaint process through eBay. After 1.5 months have passed, I finally get a response saying on how he had lost the card, then found it and shipped it to the wrong address and he now has it again. Another week passes and I finally get the Wayne Gretzky auto'd card. Turns out to be a real signing too (according to PSA grading), so yeah, for $15 and a two months wait, I don't care..

Bad thing about the transaction, I leave him Neutral and he leaves me Negative. He is no longer a registered user because of me though :)

And this one happend recently, I bought an Eric Lindros Auto'd Jersey from a guy in Canada. He only had 5 negative feedbacks and around 300 positives. None of the 5 negatives were in the last 6 months, so I figure this guy is a good guy. I guess I chose the wrong time to buy from him, I win, pay, get no response from him until I start having to call his house (at 11:00pm at night there time, 8:00pm my time.) Basically my dad talks to his dad, his dad gives the phone to his mom, my dad argues with his mom.. Finally the mom figures out that her son is a lying cheat and has $150 of my money and sends us a check. He is also not a registered user anymore and the last 15 feedbacks from him have all been negative and neutral.
