My parents are switching to Earthlink so I'm looking at downloading and installing Earthlink's software from my dorm's high speed connection. Is this software necessary to use Earthlink? Is it better than AOL at playing nicely with the rest of the computer?

when i had earthlink, it moved my favorites folder from the default to some earthlink directory deep in the hard drive. when i went to reinstall windows, i backed up the default folder, not knowing that all of my latest bookmarks were really buried in an earthlink folder. lost all of my favorites that i'd added in the last year.

I'm guessing Earthlink just requires a pppoe client. On a related note, I have Comcast, and their software scares the hell out of me. Looking at the contents of the CD, it's loaded with DLL files and there is NO explanation of what they're all supposed to do. And none of it is needed in order to establish a connection.
