Hi all,

Anyone know if the E6420 is expected to drop in price in the upcoming July 22 Intel price drop?

Thanks.

I think all the 1066FSB C2D's have been discontinued. They are clearing them out now for the 1333FSB E6550, which will cost $163. The E4500 will be $133.

333 quad pumped gets you 1333. the old ones are 266 quad pumped for 1066. The e6420 could actually be a nice pickup in future for its 8x multi. I wouldn't be surprised if they keep their price pretty steady for a while. The e6550 is a little bit faster at 2.33 (vs 2.13 for e6420) but you need a good mobo and ram to get a great oc at 7x.

@Wedge1

RAM must be a minimum of 1:1, it would need to be DDR2-667 (333*2) b/c the FSB is 333*4=1333

Good enough then. I bought 4 Gigs of DDR2 667 SuperTalent when it was on sale. Now i'm trying to pick the processor, which will in turn sort of dictate whether i want a motherboard that officially supports 1333 or not.

Was it bad timing to buy a E6420 Today? I felt a quadcore was a bit much for me so I thought I'd just overclock the E6420.

Unfortunately yes. In two weeks time a E6750 will get released at the price of approximately $183, it's going to have a faster 1333 Mhz FSB and higher default clocks of 2.6Ghz. Sure beats a 1066 MHz FSB 2.13 Ghz E6420.

They both have an 8x multiplier, the main difference is the GO stepping of the 6750.

If going for a 3.2mhz overclock there shouldn't be much if any difference in performance.

Any Core2 processor is good. They are practically all the exact same chip. Having Intel bump up the stock FSB to 1333 is no big deal. Anyone can push any C2D to 1333FSB, and voila, you have a E6750. My E6300 runs stable at 2100FSB @3670 MHz and higher. It will blow any E6750 out of the water at 1333FSB. If you wait prices will always come down, so paying $180 or whatever for a E6420 with 4mgs of cache is still a good purchase.
