Not entirely digital. Unless your eyeballs are capable of interpreting jolts of voltages, the digital information must be converted into analog form.

Well there is a local computer shop that is telling customers that DVI is a myth and no DVI Monitor is truely digital.

If memory serves, DVI is as digital as it gets right now, and probably for the near future (HDTV's use DVI for a true digital connection between the Tuner and TV/Monitor).

edit: IIRC, the new connections that are more digital will use modified and ultra-compact flux capicitors to ensure error-free bursts of mega-digital information during especially demanding display sessions like showing closeups of vaginas. there will be a special cable that is gold plated on both connectors (they will be 143 pins each) and uses oxygen-free platinum so that the information is free of coloration or cross-talk distortion, sold by monster cable. they will also be using this ultra-digital technology in the next generation of BMW 7-series, because it will help improve the I-Drive system's glitch rate to the full 100% they have been hoping to achieve. isn't it amazing how new technologies get used in all kinds of things around us? ultra-digital is the wave of the FUCHAR!

Well, they are a bunch of id10ts, a CRT is an inherently digital device, so if it had a DVI connection, it would have to be converted before display, an LCD is an inherently digitial device, so it is digital up to the point of light emission. Any analog connection to an LCD has to be estimated as digital.

DLP is truely digital, doesn't need to be converted back into analog.

DVI-D is a true digital signal path. DVI-A is analog. DVI-I can be either.

This being said, at the display end, the vast majority of devices are analog. The current exception is DLP displays. I doubt there are any others, but I could be wrong.

I guess it depends on where you draw the boundary. The light source is modulated and takes on an analog value. But I guess that's the closest you can get to an all digital display before you start plugging humans directly into the computer.
