Is DVD-ROM compatible with DVD Audio?

Hey All,

Quick question - I know that DVD-ROM is a specific standard and so is DVD Video - the format that is used for movies as well as the newer DVD Audio.

Now a DVD-ROM Drive on a computer can read DVD-ROM discs of course, as well as DVD Video discs when you have the right software - but will they be able to read DVD Audio discs? Will you need special DVD-Audio software or will
regular DVD-Video software work? Additionally, if it is not off topic, will these DVD-Audio dics work with the regular DVD movie players attached to television sets, or will new players be required?

Thanks for any input,

From what I've read, computer DVD-ROM drives are capable of reading DVD-A discs, but not with DVD-V software. I'm not sure if they need a firmware upgrade or something, or would the right software do the trick.

DVD-Video and DVD-Audio are two seperate standards. There are some very new players(not pc drives, but Hifi components) that have DVD-A
ability. The cheapest one is only 700Bucks. This is very cheap considering last year, only top quality parts where available Those did cost bteween 2000 and 5000 Bucks. There is also a player from Philiph who reads 6 channel SACD, DVD-A and DVD-Video. It´s around 2000 Bucks.

I am not sure if DVD-ROM supports the standard, but it should be able with new firm and software. But what do you need DVD-Audio for on a DVD drive in an PC enviroment? No speaker system for PC is able to produce the frequency and quality DVD-Audio offers.

I read yesterday somewhere that DVD-ROM does support DVD-A but it is pointless to use unless you have an awesome speaker/sound card setup because they won't sound much better than normal cd's.

Rellik/Ben50, DVD-A on a PC might be of interest in a HTPC or Audhiophile PC where the PC takes centerstage in the reproduction of music and/or video. Obviously these will be paired up with a decent amp and a decent set of audiophile/HT speakers. With a good system, music reproduced on a PC(using its CD-ROM drive and a good audiophile soundcard) can be pretty good, comparable to decent CD players. DVD-A would be the next sensible step, since SACD isn't supported, at least not yet.

Phiberoptix, I'm glad 128kbps mp3s work well for you, but for many many others they don't really work very well due to loss of sound quality 🙂
