Hmm...It depends, if you ask me; this is like asking if trading music w/ napster, Morpheus, etc. is illegal. It's a grey area. That said, I have downloaded a ton of stuff - but it's all fansubs; stuff like Love Hina, FLCL, and Excel Saga.

EDIT: Guess I ought to add that I also intend on buying FLCL and Love Hina when they are released here. Excel I'm not so sure about; I may not even finish the fansubs.

If an anime series has been liscensed by some company, ie: ADV Films or Manga Entertainment, then it is copyrighted, examples include, Love Hina, Card Captor Sakura, Sailor Moon, Escaflowne, etc. Downloading those series would infact be illegal. However, if a series has not been licensed in North America, then it's perfectly fine, ex: Saber Marionette J
