Is doing cardio every day counterproductive?

If so, what's the optimal frequency? Currently, I'm doing the same 30 minute routine at about the same level of intensity every day.

Ideally, you should take at least 1-2 days off per week and not go full-bore every time you do cardio. I'll typically have 1-2 hard days and the rest longer lower-intensity days to build my aerobic base.

Your body will tell you when you're doing too much anyway; if you notice sudden weight loss, lack of appetite, trouble sleeping and especially an elevated morning resting pulse rate, you need to back off.

as fausto said, you will know when its time to stop.

however, if you have a regular schedule, like the one you mentioned, its very possible that you arent over-doing it because you will eventually build up to it. i mean think about all the things you do on a regular basis that you know dont feel stressed after because you are used to it. walk up a flight of stairs everyday and eventually you wont be fatigued after the climb. do your workout everyday and eventually you will not fatigue nearly as easily. its all what feels right for you. just know to stop when something hurts, aches or you notice something irregular with your body. other than that, have a good time 🙂

p.s. there are many ways and opinions on this, but a lot of it comes down to personal preference (i am not sure of the biological standpoint). i know that i can do the same workout 6 days a week, take the 7th off, and do it again perpetually. that is only after about a month or so of training though...in the beginning stages, its a little harder to keep at it.

Fausto is correct. Doing it every day at amximum intensity will simply burn you out. You'll either get physically sick and have to stop, or mentally burned out.

Try 4 days a week, two days at maximum intensity, and two days at moderate intensity (mix them up). I found that to be best.

Thanks for the comments. I've noticed that my weight is staying the same, but I'm losing inches off my waist. Guess I'm burning fat and adding muscle someplace. Never thought I'd see my self in 30" pants again.

Yep. Ignore the scale and watch the inches!

If you just watch the scale, you'll end up looking like an effeminate crack addict.

Are you doing any weight lifting? If not, you really should. Not only will it make you look better, but muscle burns calories and you can eat more food while still losing fat.

The big thing for me about cardio is that it can get boring.I'm trying different things to mix it up,using treadmill one session, elliptical machine or stair stepper on other days.Yesterday,I tried a bit of IT on the treadmill.Today it'll be elliptical machine in X or Hill mode after doing my upper body work and abs workout.

I don't do cardio in a fitness place anymore (running on a treadmill is so boring). I just do road running and biking.

I was down to 135 at 6' by just running 10 miles 4 times a week. I was also working out with weights three times a week. People thought I had an eating disorder, but my usual dinner was an entire pizza.

honestly, although I'm sure fitness experts will come up with something every couple of years to tell you to do, just the fact that you're keeping yourself active is probably the key lol. Unless you're horribly overweight or underweight or something I'm sure it's fine =p

But here's my fitness info loaded take anyway:
Do you lift too? If you lift I wouldn't worry too much about the cardio...as long as you're lifting occasionally there shouldn't be any real negative changes to your metabolism from your body getting used to intensities...if you have specific goals for muscle size or whatever then maybe you should cut back on the cardio, but if this is just for health it doesn't really matter.

Whoa...and to think my personal goal is 180 @ 5'10" I'd be happy with that...since I enjoy having a little bit more bulk....but damn, 135 is damn near anorexic for a 6 footer...
My friend who's also 5'10" or so weighed 150 or so at one point and he looked freaking thin as hell with his shirt off already...I thought it looked kinda unhealthy. 160 is probably good for 5'10" but I want 180 just for some more muscle and bulk...

Plus I'm used to having that bulk, and don't really want people shoving me around that much easier =p I think 180lbs of muscle should be good enough for me.

I hurt my elbow doing reverse curls so I'm laying off the weights. Hope to start up again when I heal.

For the time being I'm doing multiple sets of 100 push-ups every other day. Plus, I do back and neck stretches everyday, including crunches.

I have been running 3 - 5 miles or biking for about 50 minutes/day since April, but it's too cold/snowy to bike and I have a problem with my achilles tendon, so I got a Gazelle Power Plus (has pistons so you get some resistance). I've been doing that for the last two weeks and I really like it.

I'm basically doing it for health reasons. I'm 5'8" 150 lbs with about 10% body fat. I'm not looking to bulk up, but to stay fit and toned.

Yeah, since getting married, I've bulked up to 165 and have stablized there for about a year without doing any exercise. It feels better, but I miss my rock star physique.

I was pushing 260 @ 5'10", and was considering size 40" pants and I thought to myself, "What the hell am I doing?"

5 months later, with only changing my eating habits, I am 200lbs and back into 34" pants. People will lose weight when they are ready to, just like stopping smoking and drinking.

Oh... and swiming has to be the best cardio you can do.

To lose fat quick: 45 minutes of high intensity cardio X 3 times a week.
60 minutes of low intensity cardio X 2 times a week.

To stay in shape and eat as much as you want: 45 minutes of high intensity cardio X 2 times a week.
60 minutes of low intensity cardio X 1 time a week.

With 5 cardio days during summer, I lost around 48lbs in 3 months. I kinda overlost on purpose, because I knew I would gain some of that back. I gained around 8lbs back, but I am in good shape 🙂
