is dell really this bad?

Unless you have receive physically bad machine, you will never need their support. You have the best support here at AT.

We use Dell at work and the people that do the Break/Fix on them say they would Never Ever buy a dell after seeing how many things go wrong with them.

I have no personal experience and those B/F gusy are very opinionated so take that with a grain of salt... heh.

I have unboxed and staged over 50 optiplex's, D400's, D600's, and D800's, only had one defect (a missing CDROM eject button)

The onsite warranty will have someone at your door to repair the product next day 90% of the time

I have had no complaints with Dell or their support. With 60+ machines, the only thing so far has been 2 1900fp's that went bad. They sent new ones the next day.

So far great support.

Hmm.. I thought it's either go with IBM or Dell for PCs these days... if Dell isn't reputable anymore... uh oh.

I've had to use Dell's tech support only once...

When my Canon S400 arrived (from Dell), it was DOA. I phoned Dell and they sent out another S400 via overnight air, along with the pre-paid packaging to send my broken one back.

I don't see how they could've performed any better.

Take such websites with a grain of salt. When you're #1, people like to take shots at you. And of course, the vast majority of reports on sites like that are going to be negative. The more popular your business is, the more negative reports you are going to have.

I did IT work this summer and we used Dells. At my site, 3 PowerEdge servers, 50 desktops, 20 laptops, or so. Pretty small really.
Needless to say, I bought an IBM T40 when I got my laptop in August. Dealing with their tech support was just painful.

I've always had good luck with their support, and as someone earlier stated, their onsite support turn around is fast.

Of course I use their premier support account so I don't speak to techs in India, but I thought Dell pulled out "overseas tech support" anyway, am I wrong?

The last time I heard, regular tech support (the one you don't have to pay for) is still being done in India. They pulled back the callcenter for those who pay for tech support.

seems like at least a third of those reviews are people complaining about silly things (commercials for example) and what seems to be user error

i would say dell comps are good, but their support is mediocre.
im using one right now, its a p4 1.33ghz (8100 series) which came out right about the time the pentium 4 was released. (so yeah, costed alot)

i have never defragmented long enough for it to finish, and i have to admit, i used to use it badly (lack of knowledge and how to keep a computer in tip top shape)

for some reason, its still going strong after 3 years, even as i type this.

For 2003, here are the Customer Satisfaction rankings among services corporations:

1) IBM
2) Dell
3) HPQ
4) New Horizons
5) SAP AG
6) Microsoft Corp
7) Oracle Corp
8) EDS

(this was pulled from an internal memo)

LOL. I had forgotten all about it. Dell still owes my brother's purchase an external CDROM drive. I ordered it for him Dec.4th and it still hasn't gotten here ! I just called now and they said the order was placed but then cancelled (no reason given). Gee, thanks for the notification. I just had to re-place the order. I shoulda raised hell, but I didn't care enough to... THEY SUCK.

I'm pretty sure it's just their business class support that they brought back. All the home users still have to break the language barrier for support.

The non-technical stuff for regular users like myself still got an American voice (just now)... albeit Southern accented. 😉

I work in the IS dep't .. we buy only dell's.. Corporate support is perfectly fine, as is build quality (minus a couple strangely designed cases...) and build quality of consumer is fine as well.. consumer support pretty much sucks.. but good luck finding ANY company with good support..

Personally, if I didn't know much about computers, I would probably buy a dell or something from bbuy w/ a service plan. If I didn't know anything I would buy a dell. I bought a dell laptop and I've been very happy with it..

It's only precision workstations and latitude laptops.. everything else is still india
