Is Debian that toxic ?

What is it with the rash of resignations from Debian ?

https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2014/11/msg00174.html
If I have one regret from my 18 years in Debian, it's that when the
Debian constitution was originally proposed, despite seeing it as
dubious, I neglected to speak out against it. It's clear to me
now that it's a toxic document, that has slowly but surely led Debian
in very unhealthy directions.

Seems we have at least 7 long time debian develoeprs / leaders signing off as well.

Is this the case of too many cooks in the kitchen, or is this a case of trying to tell the cooks what to do, even if they strongly disagree with the recent decisions made by the TC/GR "leaders" ?

Democracy run amuck, and a lot of [rubbish] surrounding systemd.

No profanity in the tech forums, please

I really don't get the systemd hate. I guess if Lennert Pottering hadn't made it, it wouldn't be a big deal.

Sometimes I wonder if those objecting to it have actually used it.

I think one of the issues people have is a lot of 3rd party programs are starting to depend on it, and that'll increase going forward. That can be a problem for other *nixs, and I think it could make the whole system more fragile. If everything depends on systemd, everything can go down if systemd fails. I'm not sure it's worth making a big deal over, but they are concerns.

Wouldn't Linux fail anyway if any other init system failed? :hmm:

sysvinit is basically just a bunch of scripts. If something goes wrong, one can script around it. systemd is a binary monolith. If it goes up(or goes in a direction people don't like), a fix is tougher to do.

I think systemd has a lot of potential to make using GNU/Linux easier for the end user, and for package maintainers developers, but makes it harder for an individual to modify a system it's installed on. IOW, it'll be pretty nice until it (maybe)isn't. I'm taking a wait/see approach. I'm not technically proficient enough to really weigh in on the technical merits, but I think if things stay on course, it'll be a net positive. Of course, that discounts the other *nixs. It's kind of nice being generally compatible with them. I don't like seeing Linux split from that.

Looks like a bunch of them teamed up and they forked debian now.

Just what we need, more distros!

Yea, good luck with that. It's a huge amount of work keeping a "regular" distro going, much less the behemoth Debian is. I predict it'll be nothing more than a hobby project for the lunatic fringe that fizzles out before five years pass.

Lets hope not. I'm sure the same thing was said about Debian and look where it is now. Lunatic fringe....

When Debian started, they were solving the problem of there not being any well packaged GNU/Linux distros. I don't think 'systemd sucks!' holds the same gravitas.

EDIT:This post is fucked...I lost sight of what I was trying to say.
