Is DDR3 finally becoming competitive?

In regards to the latest Asus Striker II review it makes me wonder if one should still hold out for lower DDR3 prices or just compliment my system with 8GB of DDR2 to hold me over till Nehalem.

In my main rig I have the FSB clocked to 515MHz on my 780i and my Everest scores are as good as most DDR3 scores and only in a single benchmark did I see my OC'd board lose (write performance only)

Anyone care to share their thoughts or experiences?

In my experience purchasing DDR3 for my 790i I found that crappy DDR3 sticks are becoming fairly cheap, all things considered, to purchase. Mid range sticks, low latency 1333mhz and 1600mhz sticks will still be a considerable expense. While good low latency 4gb kits and 1800mhz + kits will choke a donkey pricewise.

After looking at Newegg, it still appears that DDR3 is still much more expensive per GB than DDR2. It's really up to how you want to use your money. Nobody else can answer for what you're willing to pay.

Do I think the performance benefit of DDR3 over DDR2 is worth the price? No, I personally don't.

I would rather spend the same amount of money on much more memory or other components, because despite being slower as singular modules, I'd see more of an overall advantage from simply having that much more memory. To me, slightly slower but much more memory > slightly faster but much less memory.

Even if one were willing to spend as much money as it took to get a lot of DDR3, another could argue that money could be better spent on a better processor, or graphics card (if you game), or whatever. If you are willing to spend that money on the best of everything, then go ahead.

Personally, though, DDR3 isn't for me yet.
