Is DDR2 800 backwards compatible?

Why are DDR2 memory cost more than a E6300? It didn't take that much skill to make the memory relative to the cpu. I'm buying my PC and I feel that the extra $100 should go to my cpu. It's feels wrong that the memory will cost more than my cpu. I am saddened.

Anyway, can I use DDR2 800 on a mobo that only supports DDR2 533, let's say? DDR2 800 uses a higher voltage most likely than the DDR2 533.

Depends. Some motherboards don't like using RAM with a voltage higher than 1.8V (won't boot at all) others don't care.

If you're not overclocking then get 533 RAM, if you are then 800 will let you raise the FSB to 400 without using dividers.

i agree with bob, spend less on the ram and get some 533 ram. your ram shouldn't be more than your cpu

if I remember correctly you just start getting your performance back with 800 with an AMD AM2 compared with 939...
