Is Daylight Savings Time Worse than Y2K?

Changes to Daylight Savings Time continue to plague IT companies across the country

Daylight savings time (DST) is probably one of the most annoying inventions of the human race. Each year people spend a week or so adjusting to an hour forwards or backwards causing all sorts of erratic behavior and poor sleep while people adjust. Last year the U.S. Government decided to take it a step further and cause IT professionals and IT vendors to spend plenty of time and money to satisfy a few politicians with a not so brilliant idea.

What do you think? Is DST worse than Y2K? I remember the panic caused when Y2K occurred, even outside of IT companies - is DST really such a headache for IT managers?

It drives me up a fucking wall. We have datacenters in three places, one of which doesn't use DST, one of which switches on a different day, and here in the US. GAH! The amount of boxes requiring patches every time a politician has some crackpot whim about how a DST change is going to save the universe is just plain ridiculous.

Doesn't bother me one bit. Of course, we dont change time in AZ, just time zones. So I guess its a pain for friends and reletives hehe

It's extremely annoying and the studies have shown that the recent change resulted in a net energy use increase, rathter than the savings that it was supposed to generate. If Congress truly represented the people, rather than being so beholden to commercial interests and their money, not only would the expanded DST be rolled back, the entire DST would be eliminated.

If you were prepared then no biggie. Microsoft released a patch months before the change. The biggest issue I saw was with exchange and calendars.

I think Y2K had more potential for problems. But imo both are overblown by people looking to make a quick buck. How many predictions did we hear before Y2K about everything coming to a halt? How much of that came true?

None of the predictions came true because the predictions were made by idiots. The problem was huge, but recognized years ahead of time, so it was fixed. Everybody whose business was dependent on computers understood that not fixing it would mean their demise. The people looking to make a quick buck aimed mostly at the consumer, who had no clue and little risk exposure.

From an IT standpoint it was a minor PITA but nothing major, a few smartphones in our environment seemed to be the only problem children I heard about. I just don't see the overall benefit, if people want to save electricity why not just alter your work schedule as the seasons require it instead of jacking with the common system of timekeeping that we all use? I'm with AZ on this, MN needs to ditch daylight savings even if it means I have to wake up and go to work in the dark for a few extra weeks. I'd rather go to work in the dark and have an extra hour of daylight after I get home. It's not like people turn the lights off at work once the sun comes up...

Daylight savings time is stupid and has no real purpose. It just causes hundreds and thousands of people to mess up their schedule twice a year when they miss it. The birds know when to wake up so it does not cause them any trouble.

Its a PITA, between making sure the servers were patched, to our developers rewriting our code for our products, and the testers testing the new code, to coming in at 0130 to make sure nothing got hosed up. my company spent a lot of money on this stupid idea and im sure we are not the only one out there. stupid government.

time changes are obsolete and should be erased out of the books. and yes i have written my state senators and reps about it and have not received any response at all.

Working in the world of distance education it is one of my biggest annoyances. No matter what every year some prof wants to give a quiz on a weekend with DST and every time without fail they will screw all their students because of the shift. DST is a relic of the farm age - now in the info age just give us our timezones and stick with them

DST is just another way the government has to screw with our lives twice a year providing no benefit whatsoever.

I remember an old lady writing a letter to the editor back when DST was first implemented. She claimed her garden couldn't take another hour of sunlight every day. 😀

Well ... It doesn't matter how many people are up in arms over it... I hate it, but... But I doubt they will change it... It's like metric and standard... Why not just stop screwing with it, and go the way the world goes, and stop muking with the time.

One of the justifications for moving it up in 07 was we would have a "longer" day for people to work the fields. Yes, a senator actually said that. Forget his name though.

You're pretty old. Ben Franklin invented DST in 1784 .

I'm not THAT old. When did we start DST in this country, late 60's, early 70's?? Sometime in there?

Taxing shutters, LOL funny stuff. 😉

How thoughtful of him. I'm sure the extra hour of golf he could play had nothing to do with his support for it. 😉

He is probably right though. Except when they're extremely busy (planting or harvesting season) most farmers these days aren't out of bed, dressed and ready to go when the sun comes up. I know I'm not.

I used to love DST but as I get older I find myself wishing they would just leave it one way or the other.

I think the thing is stupid.

There's no need to change the clock, it's retarded.

I think the primary purpose now is for school kids safety. They don't wnat them standing around roads in the dark waiting for their bus.

The solution is to just ask everybody to start stuff one hour later. School starts at 8:00 instead of 7:00. Businesses open at 9:00 instead of 8:00 etc.

Yeah, changing school and work schedules is a lot easier than DST.
