Is data recoverable after a quick format?

Instead of formating my system drive last time i reinstalled windows, i formatted a drive full of music & divx. i didn't notice that the drive letters got switched around after installing some new hardware that same day- or maybe it was just me who screwed up the letters. anyways, I looked though old forums on this issue. someone mentioned that you can unformat- but after a little research on the internet I found that would only work if you running an old os like 3.11. that same person also said a program called 'lost n found' might be able do the trick, but i cannot find it anywhere on the web, sharereactor, kazaa, etc.
since it was only a quick format, that data should still be there right?

Quick format or full format the data would still be "there", at least to data recovery software. And that's what you should Google for. I don't know of free software, but I do know Ontrack is highly regarded. If the data are important, you may end up spending quite a bit to get it back. If it's not so important, you may be able to find some software that will get it back for free/low cost. The important thing to start with is to not use the drive, don't write anything to it, or your data will get written over. Of course, most software can still get it, but your chances improve if you don't write on the drive.

quick followup for whomever this may help- with ontracks's eazyrecovery pro, 56 gb out of 58 gb were recovered. i am astounded. . . the only thing that it didn't do perfect at was retaining directory names. a bunch of folders in the recovery were labled "dir000" or "dir001" etc, but no bother. no biggie
