Is DAoC still a good MMORPG?

I never played it but i remember reading a good deal about it and hearing about how great it was back in its day. I also heard that it is similar to WoW (or WoW is very similar to it) and i was wondering if the game is still good or if like most MMOs the devs and/or company have ran it into the groud?

I ask this because i grow tired of WoW and EQ2. WoW is having major technical issues (like i cant log into characters created before resubscribing but the ones that i create after seem to work fine) that and im basically tired of it having played it since launch.

Also, in DAoC, do they have non PvP servers? I have heard that the game is very PvP focused and that is something i do not care for too much anymore. Can a person that mainly wants to do PvE enjoy it?

How does it compare to WoW and EQ2?

daoc and WoW dont really have much in common except you have classes that use weapons, heal, and cast magic.

Other than that I think the two games are really different.

Daoc's combat system imo is better because you have reactionary styles on melee characters. Sheilds are worth more in daoc because they actually have attack styles and you can protect and guard other characters.

The classes in daoc are much more diverse than in WoW and really requires a group to shine. WoW as you know seems to be a more solo oriented game. That sounds great on the surface but really sucks when you start realizing that the sense community is not there.

The pvp has a better goal in daoc than in WoW imo and is better implemented.

After playing WoW for the past 8 months the game feels more like a fps than a MMORPG.
I cancelled my accounts two nights ago and plan on giving daoc another shot with their new Non-toa servers coming out on the 12th.

If you are into a team oriented game with clear rvr goals I would say give daoc a shot.

I just recently signed up for DAoC two weeks ago. I had never played it before but know people who had. All of them gave it good reviews. I picked up the platinum edition of the game for around $20. It has all the expansion packs except for the new one called Catacombs which was $15 I think.

Overall I am still a low level character, quests are fun, instanced dungeons are nice. There is a nifty system that eliminates spawn camping for mobs. I haven't run accoss a single rude person yet. I also play on a RP server so that may be why. A great experience so far.

Regular updates too so its a nice to know that they still care about it and keep adding new servers and areas and fixes.

Where did you get it for $20? That includes a 30 day subscription, right?

Also, is are there PvE servers in this game or does it revolve around PvP?

I was a big DAOC junkie....3 years ago, had 2 accounts and various characters.
Had a dedicated lvl 50 female Sorc, and I enjoyed the RvR in the game.
The expansion were great, the new SI xpack introduced a lot of new glowy weapons and dungeons to explore. I really fell in love with this game.
But,....much like many mmorpgs, it had its balance issues. Many chars were gimped and nerfed and many others were boosted.
The problem with these types of games is that you're STUCK with that character... sure you can lvl grind a new one, but that gets old, repeatative and extremely boring quickly.

I left right before their "Frontiers" Patch, where it took their entire RvR system and overhauled it.
I returned in light of selling my character in ebay, so I came in, took some screenshots, saw what was left of my house (nothing, rent wasnt paid, I made my living as a Tailor, I was the first Master Tailor to reach the lvl Cap in Palomides Server)

The RvR was revamped like they said it would, you can enter battles instantly with the teleporters.
However, I just didnt get into it anymore. Your path is rather fixed and I wasn't about to re-create a char that was uber out in the field.

That is why I enjoy Eve Online because you make what you want to become. Anyways, DAOC was my very first MMORPG and I enjoyed every second of it because of the Guilds I was apart of. We were like family and thus made me forget about the crappiness that my characters abilities were.
In the end, I didn't sell off my character and I'm wondering if my account is still there.....
anyways, anyone want to buy a lvl 50 Sorc Rank 5? :p

danny~!

The extreme forced grouping in DAoC has... interesting consequences. For example almost everyone who seriously participates in RVR has two accounts with the second account providing a 'buff bot' character that exists solely to buff their main character.

One of my friends levelled from 1-50 as a minstrel without ever actually killing anything because people would invite him immediately, even if he told them beforehand that he was going to play mana song, autofollow and then go to bed.

When I went back to give it another try after a year or so off, as a level 50 warden I immediately got sent a tell to join a group - when I said that I was already grouped, they told me they would give me money if I would quit my current group and join them instead, and besides they had the best 'camp' in the dungeon (darkness falls). When I refused and told them that this was the first time I had ever played the character they said they didn't care and I should join them anyway and just do group bubble ;p

In any case, if you don't want to pvp, there is at least one non-faction server I think, you certainly don't want a trials of atlantis disabled server because otherwise you will have nothing to do other than pvp.
