Is Craigslist useless in your city?

When we lived in DC/northern Virginia, Craigslist was awesome. Did not matter what you had to sell - within 15 minutes of posting we'd have 5 people that wanted it. Sold off so much junk with ease.

Here in south Florida, it is basically useless. Posted a bunch of kids' stuff yesterday and nada. Not a single email. We have tried at least 5 times over several years to sell various stuff and never get any hits. Maybe get one crazy that wants to offer $2 for something you list for $5. Ughh this stuff is just going to charity.

Craigslist is useless anywhere people are horrible.

So, yes.

OP isn't describing what he's selling, for $5 it might be something that no one wants anymore. I've had great luck with CL up in Daytona, only thing I couldn't sell was a pair of Infinity 6X9 coax speakers, I asked $20 for the pair, they are in perfect condition and would be a great upgrade from factory speakers, no bites, I guess people think the $20 set they can buy new at Walmart will be just as good.

It wasn't very popular when I lived in the U.P. At least around the Escanaba area, anyway. Maybe in Marquette it would've been useful but otherwise I think it is pretty low-traffic for the rest of the U.P. (last I checked).

EDIT: I just checked the "General" for sale section for the Yoop. There's a decent amount of listings for Jul 13 and Jul 12th, actually. Apparently it's picked up a bit since I last was on the site. I wouldn't think it's busy, and those listings were in different areas in the Upper Peninsula (several hours to travel from one end to the other), but it's definitely more useful than it was.

Well look at it the other way. Its harder to sell but easier when you want to get something.

I live in NoVA now and selling is easier but when I wanted to pick up a lawn mower for my rental house people were selling broken mowers for $40-60. "I have a mower that does not run, leaks oil, and has a loose wheel. But its a Honda so I want $60 for it." Yet when I was in NC I could get a running mower for less than $40 and sometimes for free.

all that works around here is a bunch of facebook groups and a local country-wide auction site (which is mostly used by people on the other side of the mountain though...).
International postage is high too, so there's nothing you can do except keep your old electronics and then throw them away.

It usually takes me average of a month to sell something. No matter what the price, i get offered half non stop. I started putting disclaimers of no offers and that has cut down the worthless emails. I still sell stuff. Just keeps the idiots away.

CL here worked nicely for finding a new dining set a couple weeks ago. Main thing is patience, either buying or selling, if you're selling you often have to bump the ad 3-4 times and ignore a lot of bs emails.

Why are you selling something for $5 on craiglist? Throw that crap out or donate it.

CL is good for furniture, cars etc...

I'm about 100 miles north of it now, but CL for Atlanta would be extremely useful if I ever want to meet someone and have them rob and/or carjack me.

Love it in the Austin/Round Rock area use it all the time....

As a seller, it sucks. I tried selling some things on CL Austin, but gave up after getting nothing but low-ballers and flakes for months. Was not being unreasonable at all, did a lot of checking to make sure I was giving a fair price.

That being said, I'll likely give CL a look to buy some things for my new apt I'm moving into. Lots of great stuff for sale.

It used to be better... I think too many people are avoiding it because of the scammers and the bad PR it got in recent years.

I've sold quite a few things here on the west side of Florida. Not quite as active as up in Detroit area though.

What kind of "kids' stuff" are we talking about.

We moved and didn't have room for our power tower/heavy bag combo. I wanted it gone soon, so put a cheep price. I was getting texts within 20 minutes and had to take the ad down completely because I was still getting texts about it.

It really depends on what you're selling. I doubt many parents want used toys from some rando. Much easier to just go to goodwill or a garage sale.
