Is counting cards illegal?

I don't think it's illegal...as long as you don't have a device doing it you should be fine.

The casinos frown on it though, and they can kick you out.

If you can count cards in your head (without a device) then good for you. If the casino figures out that you can count cards, they will ask you to leave. They have within their rights to refuse service to anyone.

It's something that some people can do, however, most can't. I don't think there's anything wrong with it, but the house doesn't like it, since the odds move ever so slightly into your favor if you do it right.

There have been a few shows on History and Discovery about casino security and professional gamblers, see if you can catch one as it will answers a lot of your questions about how it all works. One of the main things that was shown was that casinos are moving to machines that constantly shuffle 2 decks on each deal, and after each hand is finished the cards are shuffled back in to the deck. They make it next to impossible to count in any way.
