It's kind of the Beverly Hills of Miami. It's a really nice neighborhood in the middle of a bigger city.

It's not too far from the beach, but obviously not as close as Miami Beach.

umm, it depends where in coral gables. most of coral gables is upper-middle class, but there are some places that are pretty crappy. coral cables is close to cocowalk (coconut grove, "the grove") where you can find some good shopping and bars. but it doesn't really compete w/ south beach. coral gables is pretty far from the beach. depending on traffic, it could be anywhere from 15-45 minutes.

There are bad parts of Coconut Grove, but there are no bad parts of Coral Gables.

The difference being that Coral Gables is its own city while Coconut Grove isn't. If you're in Coral Gables and you run into a bad part, you've probably either gone into Coconut Grove, South Miami or Little Havana.

Coconut Grove is funny. One minute you see partying, and the next you're in the middle of the ghetto. There's no slow transitition whatsoever, hehe.

i wasn't really telling him to stay in the grove over staying in coral gables. i was just mentioning some things that an individual vacationing in coral gables might find nearby. all in all, i really wouldn't stay in coral gables. heck, i wouldn't even take a vacation to miami, but maybe that's just because i live there. :p

if you are over 50 maybe Gables, if not try to get near S. Beach....it's going to be touristy, but it's also got a lot of locals. Quite a few head down from here on the weekend to club (2 hour drive with traffic).

I was born and raised in Coral Gables, a beautiful neighboorhood yet very expensive now.

You should try Key Biscayne or Virgnian Key. This is where the Lipton Tennis tourney is held each year. It's not a good example of Miami though, low crime, no traffic and small, quiet beaches. I worked there for 3 years and loved it. I had a secretary that lived on the key and suffered from "keyitis" where people don't want to leave the key, despite it's small stature.

enjoy your vacation,

Pretty much all of Miami is crime-laden and freaky. I know someone who goes to UM (Univ Miami) Coral Gables who's place got broken into. Try to find a larger hotel so it'll be safer and don't wander around at night.

I wouldn't want to live anywhere south of the West Palm Beach area :p

If you are retired, then Coral Gables is a great place to stay. My great grandparents stay there all the time.

I don't think Coral Gables is a risky area, you do have to go through some to get in and out of it. Like Las Olas Islands, that's in Fort Lauderdale, no crime at all.

However I see Orlando is on your list....where are you coming from, NY? If you like theme parks disney is good this time of year before Thanksgiving and then after it but before winter break for schools. I am not sure what deals are Florida only (since I am from Florida), but I was quoted $49 a night at the Disney All Stars, $79 a night at the next tier Disney hotel, and then $109 for the next .... I just bought annual passes for my wife and I this month and will be up there Dec 12th through 15th or 16th. It's cooler and the crowds aren't that bad.

Lol after living in S. Fla, I actually have no desire to visit Miami or Lauderdale. Whole area seems nice if you're a tourist, but settle down and the scamming businesses, subpar schools, and other social issues really start getting in the way of quality living :(

In any case, enjoy being a tourist though! :)

ineedacomputer, I live in W. Palm but I've lived as far south as Coral Springs. I've been to Miami a decent bit. I've actually lived in almost 10 cities, and by way of comparison, S. Fla just isn't so great for me.

Yeah the spanish women :), they are nice, got to love the strong feature and mucho curves. I met one one night and her name was something that meant princess (she was)...we danced and swam in the ocean, then around 5-6am got a room and it was a nice night....however it turned out she was married when we were saying good bye the next day (either way it wouldn't have worked, we would be 45-60mins away from each other)...South Beach and also Fort Lauderdale Beach are great for meeting women or men. My mom literally grew up 2 places away from the Ft. Lauderdale strip on Cortez. Her house was in 'Where the Boys Are" (the original not the remake, by then it was a parking lot for BeachPlace ;)). Talk about the perfect place to live growing up.
