Is "cool website" an oxymoron?

I heard someone say that some years ago, probably a good decade. Well, is it?

Yeah, you're probably be hard pressed to find a "cool website" anymore. Long time ago everything was new so it seemed cool. Now you're lucky to find the content you want without a web developer screwing it all up, making things harder than they need to be.

I have some chops at finding stuff online, all kinds of things from the tangible to the informational... lots of practice, and this is with a full querty keyboard using a W10 laptop and usually Chrome. I should attempt more using my android Galaxy... I can, I'm just not used to it yet.

What is "cool" online? Well, maybe it's true, nothin'. But some are cooler than others, so there's that... Maybe we can get a little discussion of THAT here...

Some cool sites are still around and I run into one once in a while, but most sites now are just javascript vomit with a touch of CSS and HTML. I don't know what is up with this trend of trying to put so much javascript on stuff that really does not need it. It just makes the site annoying to use, especially stuff that pops up or moves etc. Interactivity for sake of it is not a good thing.

I don't know if it's an example, obviously they have teams of programmers dedicated to their pages, but the most annoying website I can think of is Amazon. There's so much stuff going on many times it feels like I'm poking around a mine field of invisible actions that interfere with my intentions.

THE HAMPSTER DANCE :D

The original Hampster Dance was created by Deidre LaCarte in 1998. It is mirrored here for posterity, with a minor tweak to embed audio in a way supported by recent browsers.

(If your browser doesn't allow the audio to start automatically, try the player)

And on-topic the main problem is that most of the "cool" internet stuff has been done like 80 million times already.

These days, websites that me go "Wow!" look like they were made in 1997, and don't require js to see any of the content. Those are cool sites, and it's like finding a unicorn.

I couldn't even come up with an example of a cool website. There are several i go to quite often as they are useful & easy to use. I don't "surf" around the net like i used to years ago either though.
