it depends on the company. accenture does alot of outsourcing and they're not your typical management consulting firm. i was looking at a position at bain - they mostly do strategy consulting. i don't know if the position itself is hard, but they only look for the most qualified applicants. a friend of mine was hired, ivy league, 3.7 gpa, tons of honors, internships (one summer was spent at accenture, actually), etc.
starting salary coming right out of undergrad is $53k with a $5-6k increase every 6-8 months. you're expected to leave to business school after 2-3 years. undergrads are hired as associate consultants, work, go to business school, and maybe come back as full-fledged consultants. some extremely qualified individuals will be hired as associates without having to go to business school.
hours are not insane, maybe 55hrs/week average. compare that to 90 hrs a week for i-banking with similar starting salary (but none of the crazy bonuses.) coming out of a company like bain, you basically have your choice at any top 5 business school. i'm not sure how it is at accenture.
