Is consulting a difficult job?

Colleague of mine just quit to join accenture.
Wondering what the job is like.
Anyone has any experiences to share?

How's the hours like? I've heard some people say consulting pays well if you can take the hours....

it can be a nice job if you like travelling (and are young w/ no family). Good way to get a lot of FF miles.

it depends on the company. accenture does alot of outsourcing and they're not your typical management consulting firm. i was looking at a position at bain - they mostly do strategy consulting. i don't know if the position itself is hard, but they only look for the most qualified applicants. a friend of mine was hired, ivy league, 3.7 gpa, tons of honors, internships (one summer was spent at accenture, actually), etc.

starting salary coming right out of undergrad is $53k with a $5-6k increase every 6-8 months. you're expected to leave to business school after 2-3 years. undergrads are hired as associate consultants, work, go to business school, and maybe come back as full-fledged consultants. some extremely qualified individuals will be hired as associates without having to go to business school.

hours are not insane, maybe 55hrs/week average. compare that to 90 hrs a week for i-banking with similar starting salary (but none of the crazy bonuses.) coming out of a company like bain, you basically have your choice at any top 5 business school. i'm not sure how it is at accenture.

I consult at Johnson & Johnson, its a bich n a half...but if you get past that, making $80/hour for consulting isnt too bad

Wow.

55hrs/wk is nothing. I already work that kind of hours now... and I'm in a government job....
Damn. No wonder he left.

Lots of travelling. Depends on the project, you could have 3 day work weeks. So basically, you fly into work on monday night, tuesday - thursday you work 14hr days, fly home friday, then repeat. The company used to pay really well, but not anymore due to economy.

Is that how much you're billing or take home pay?

I have friends who did it, they did a LOT of travelling. Now they are working desk jobs and better hours, which is nice. But those first couple of years you have to pay the price time and travel wise.
