just like the title says... my friend just joined here as Shohoku81. but he's having trouble logining in. so right now i am testing with his ID and Pass. but seems like i got in here just fine... must be his ISP?? anyone know?

The problem is that CompuServe is owned by and shares many IP addresses with, AOL. YOU (or your friend) are welcome on AnandTech. AOL is NOT! It is an unfortunate side effect of the ban on AOL.

<<AnandTech forums, at its own discretion, may bar registration from any specific email service or ISP. Presently, we do not allow registration using addresses on Go-toworld.com, Hotmail.com, Nightmail.com, Whitehouse.com. >>

They need to expand upon this list. Right now it just lists email providers you can't use to sign up with. I know for a fact that AOL is banned. Compuserve *might* be, but I'm not sure.

<Edit> Mod got it.

Troll = annoying, vile being who posts for the sole purpose of irritating people, and starting flame wars.

Nef = person who makes useless posts about nothing (like a post with nothing but "word" or something stupid) simply to increase their post count.

NEF = A name given to person who nefs in or make a thread of nef.(see neffing)
Neffing= is posting useless garbage solely for the purpose of upping one's post count.
Here is a good example of a NEF thread testing
To see if you are NEF check here for list. List NEFs starting with number one j/k
TROLL = A thief. Or someone who tries 2 con other people out of their $$, usually done in the FS/FT forum.

Isn't it really easy to track down an AOL user who trolls though? I mean, their email is their homepage is their yada yada yada?

They can create so many new addresses it's absurd, and the IP address of an AOL user changes constantly (I believe, because they go through proxies?)

BK is correct. AOL has an ENORMOUS block of IP addresses that are dynamic all the way back to the first octet. The proxy server setup makes the problem even worse because it is impossible to narrow down the point of origin geographically.

Smaller ISPs use longer lease times, generally only come through a handful of routers, and are not nearly as dynamic.
