Survival of the fittest. It makes sense. I get the feeling that most of us are liars. We don't do it on purpose though, and I said most, not all. Its just that we aren't aware of the contingencies upon which our love and compassion hinges.
.

Only crappy people will uncover their TRUE side when shit hits the fan.

Those that are honest and good......not much changes.

For me it is.
I have no compassion for people who deliberately hurt themselves or ruin their lives.
This includes drug users and folks who repeatedly make horrible life decisions.
I normally dont go out of my way to help them, unless they are family.

Perhaps you are like that because you were put down and made to feel worthless by your guardians who felt you were ruining their lives by hurting yourself and ruin your life, so you became just like them.

The problem for people who lack compassion is that they lack it for themselves. This is why we should not judge. When you judge others you judge the part of yourself that is judgmental because you are just like them.

It's like stabbing yourself in the eye.

Just thought I would mention it, because it's not the kind of knowledge I think is commonly available, and to me, of course, you ARE family.
