Is Comcast's DVR box hard to use?

GoingUp

Just got the integrated HD cable box with DVR. I want to record the NCAA Hockey game tonight at 6PM on ESPNHD. Do I just navigate to that time today through the menu and hit record? I wont be around tonight so I have to set it up ahead of time. Do I have to specifiy if I want it recorded in HD or standard TV? What about adding extra recording time to the end of time block to cover OT?

Did it not come with a manual?

Can you not look up the model number online to get an online manual?

I don't have one so I can't walk you through the process from experience, but it shouldn't be too hard to find a how-to on the web. Teh intarwebs has everything.

using the guide browse to the channel and time of show. hit info button, hit record.

since only certain channels are HDTV, if you browse to the HD channel it will record in HD, if you browse to the non hd channel, it will record in non hd. 😉

it's pretty simple. the record the series function is also quite useful.

it's fairly easy.

Yeah i worked for Comcast hooking these suckerz up. No manual. U just hit the DVR button on your remote and follow the onscreen guide. It's pretty simple user-friendly.

I've got one - I mean there should be a separate HD and regular channel feed. Just select the HD one, and if you're worried for OT just record the program after it as well 😉

I have the Comcast DVR and love it...although it can be a bit buggy at times.

Recording is really as simple as navigating to any program in the program guide, and hitting the record button.

One of the issues people have noted with this box is that if you set something to record when the cable box is off, the cable box will automatically turn itself on right before recording-- but will mute the audio while it records. Some people think of this an an actual feature (in case your DVR is hooked up to a home stereo)... but it can be frustating if you try to watch TV on another channel since there is no way to turn the audio back on except to powercycle the box (which would cancel your recording).

My solution to this is to just never turn off your cable box-- but you can also repgrogram a key on your DVR remote that will act as a mute/un-mute button for the cable box. You can also re-prorgram another button to act as a 30-second skip button-- which works great for cutting through commercials (just hit the button four times)...

not true.

what happens is the cable box mutes.

solution, take the remote, click on "Cable" then click on "Mute" voila you have sound.

that's all i've ever done and it's always worked.

Yup, I have the DCT6412 Phase III DVR and experience all of that, and the 30 second skip is very useful!

No he's right, I can't just hit Cable and unmute it like that, atleast not with the provided controller.

call comcast. the tech guy will take you thru it. you can reprogram your remote to do it.

it's worth it. better than restarting the box.

Ermm.. isn't that what I said?

I have tried that it didn't work... maybe your remote had that button pre-programmed. Mine didn't. When I click mute on my remote (even when it is in "Cable" mode, which it almost always is), it mutes and unmutes my TV... NOT the cable box.

The only solution was to never turn off the DVR, or to repgrogram an unused button to mute/unute the cable box itself.
